We started with 5 new defensive starters on defense. Olshansky (canty), Brooking (Thomas), Spencer (Ellis), Sensabaugh (Williams), Jenkins (Henry).

It took a while for it to really gel, but you can't deny that it has.

First 4 games we allowed 78 points
5-8 we allowed 74 points
9-12 we allowed 54 points
13-16 we allowed 37 points

Even the amount of points we allowed is higher than how well this defense has really played.

We've played a bend but dont break defense, and other than the game against the Giants we haven't broke.

I blame that game on some fluke big plays, as well as a complete inability to run the ball.

All 5 new starters are upgrades. Jenkins is a major upgrade at CB and has made the biggest impact IMO. Henry simply could not run anymore. Anything longer than 10 yds, he was toast.

thats the thing... we are going into next year with basically this entire team + a new rookie class.

I can hardly imagine this team better than it is right now, but all our players are entering their prime, except for probably brooking and flozell.

No one on our team is about to retire in the next year or two, probably not even brooking.

The last part is awfully impressing if you look at who we played in that span. 37 in 12 quarters against 3 of the top5 scoring offenses. Tell that to someone after the Giants game and you'd be declared insane.

No doubt very impressive indeed.

Correction...make that 2 new rookie classes.

JW, BW, Brewster, Hamlin and Hodges never saw the field.

On D alone we get 2 pass rushers, and ILB who runs 4.45 with a 40 vert, a safety who was a leader and ballhawk in college and a ST demon in Hodges who made a ton of plays and forced TO's at TCU.

Add the 2010 class plus, another camp for our young players to grow (Jenkins, Scandrick, Spencer) and the over all D to gel together. Should be something to watch.

I really hope Hodges can come back from the injury but just like the S we got a few years back with the same thing I kinda have my doubts

Thanks for putting that in perspective. If anyone had said we'd give up 37 combined points against the Chargers, Saints, and Eagles I'd have laughed my butt off. Very impressive. Maybe I need to rethink some of my hate towards Wade.

2 things:

1) good thread - bump

2) We seemed to have gone from never scoring on the first drive to usually scoring on the first drive. What changed? How much did that affect the defensive approach?

I like this young defense but the big question remains. Will Wade be here next year. I really hope he will be. If he stays our defense improves. If he leaves it's up in the air.

Well, except for the last three games -- we didn't break, we didn't bend, we IMPOSED OUR WILL!

But yes, "points against" is the best variable to use for determining how good a defense is, no question in my mind. It can be tough to stop a team from getting yards between the twenties, but when the field gets smaller (a.k.a. the red zone), that's where a defense proves it's worth.

And we are the best in the conference.

Justin Beriault Ball State.

Didn't know Hodges had the same issue.

Well then that could make room for AJ Edds or Josh Hull as depth ILB's.

Good thread. But you're wrong about not being able to run the ball in that game. It was giving up plays across the middle that killed us in that game the most.
