Gil Brandt has gone full blown senile:

Thought Garrett Gilbert was underrated before today, but he could go as high as 3rd round now. Should have been combine invite.

Johnson has all-star performance

Former John Tyler and SMU standout Jeremy Johnson takes time for a photo after the All-Star College Bowl on Friday in Greenville, S.C. Brandon Folsom
GREENVILLE, S.C. — Southern Methodist University wide receiver Jeremy Johnson, a former John Tyler High School standout, could not be denied Friday night.

Johnson competed in the second annual College All-Star Bowl on the campus of Furman University and he wowed professional scouts from the onset of the game.

Although the National team defeated his American squad 12-6, he participated as a kick returner on special teams, blocked on key running plays, caught passes for crucial first downs and even ran the ball to set up a score.

He was a starter on offense and saw several reps late in the contest, something the NFL and CFL scouts at the game noticed.

After National grabbed an early 9-0 lead , Johnson tucked the ball on an end around on third down and rushed 15 yards to set up South Carolina State kicker Nick Belcher with an easy field goal try. That field goal put American on the scoreboard in the second quarter for the first time in the game.

“We tried it one time in practice, and I didn’t even run it,” said Johnson of the reverse. “Coach (Willie Jefferies) saw that I could run, so he put me in that play. So, I just tried to make a play.”

And that he did.

Two quarters later, Johnson burned his defender to nab a diving catch that set Belcher up with another chip-shot field goal inside National’s 35-yard line.

“It was a shake route, and Coach wanted us to go deep,” Johnson said. “The defender was right on me, but I still managed to catch the ball. It was a tough catch. The defender was fighting for the ball, but I wasn’t letting him get away with it.”

Johnson proved both offensively and on special teams that he deserves a roster spot in the NFL. He’s a guy who has never missed a practice and works hard in the weight room. He’s also someone the all-star coaches loved this week at practice in South Carolina.
