I was thinking about this the other day, NO I do not have numbers to back me up, but IMO our defense is the same as it was when Zimmer was here coaching the 4-3. We played a bend but don't break defense and never got any turnovers. Zimmers defenses here were always top 5, but didn't have near the talent with the exception of a few. Both D's also never really made/make game changing plays.

The only real difference I see is more sacks. I can remember wanting those when we had Zimmer, and now we do, but not much else.

Don't get me wrong I think Wade is a great DC, but so is Zimmer.

Both defense though put us in situation where the offense has to drive 80 yards though, and that is why IMO we are killing ourselves. Here is a stat for you stat guru's, Since 2008 we are 32 in the league at creating TO's. That stat is very telling, and IMO even more of reason to cut Wade loose.

:laugh1: That is a name I never thought I would hear again!!

I loved that 03 defense we ran under Zimmer. We had Newman shutting down WRs, Roy Williams still playing like a beast, and field leaders like Dat Nguyen, Dexter Coakley, and Darren Woodson.

Zimmer Defensive Ranking

2000 they were 22nd in pts. and 19th in yards and 28th in TO Differential.
2001 they were 20th in pts. and 4th in yards and 24th in TO Differential.
2002 they were 13th in pts. and 18th in yards and 20th in TO Differential.
2003 they were 2nd in pts. and 1st in yards and 22nd in TO Differential.
2004 they were 27th in pts. and 16th in yards and 28th in TO Differential.
2005 they were 12th in pts. and 10th in yards and 19th in TO Differential.
2006 they were 20th in pts. and 13th in yards and 15th in TO Differential.

Wade Phillips/ Brian Stewart Era

2007 they were 13th in pts. and 9th in yards and 8th in TO Differential.
2008 they were 20th in pts. and 8th in yards and 30th in TO Differential.
2009 they were 2nd in pts. and 9th in yards and 13th in TO Differential.
2010 they are 21st in pts. and 4th in yard and 21st in TO Differential.

Something to look at, although it's hard to compare Zimmer to Wade because the talent level is better now than it was when Zimmer was here (IMO).

In the early years, Zimmer didn't have the talent on the defense as Wade has now and Parcells wouldn't let Zimmer loose on the play calling, Parcells kept it very conservative.

I'd take Mike Zimmmer as a headcoach right now over wade Phillips in a hearbeat, Zimmmer commands respect, he wouldn't put with this BS that's going on with this team now

I take it you don't care for Wade's new look physique or his new defensive schemes.

Sorry, this thread is an absolute joke.

You can't be serious about calling out Wade's defense.

The defense is just about the only great thing on this team right now.

"Wade Philips roster has more talent"

Because of who?

Wade's defense is better than Zimmer's.

I think it's a shame what happened to Zimmer's wife and I think he's generally a good guy, but I stopped being impressed with him as a defensive coach back in 2004 or so.

And he stunk at Atlanta and has had one good season in Cincy.

Wade's defense is far more attacking when it comes to the QB. The predictability of coverage accusation does concern me. But I'd take Zimmer's scheme and coaching of the defense than Zimmer's. Some may say that is like taking the urinal cake over dog poop.

And people will make excuses for Zimmer, but he had some talent on defense and just couldn't make the most out of it outside of 2003. And even that defense fizzled down the stretch.

Wade OTOH, did a pretty nice job in '07, go the defense to come on strong in the second half of '08 and got a good job from the defense in '09. Zimmer had the awful '06 season because the defense started out well and got exposed by Sean Payton and couldn't stop a single running back or fullback in the league that went out for a pass (remember Mike Karney the receiving terror?)

I'm more frustrated with Wade for letting up on these players after he got on them in '09 and it worked. But from a scheme standpoint, I generally like his approach.

Top 5 defense means nothing without takeaways. Takeaways means more points for the team, which equals playoff wins and championships. Heck... we had a top 5 defense when we lost to Carolina years back. Final result... a LOSS! I just hope this teams gets rolling. A seven game win streak would be great!
