to being where they need to be. I honestly believe that. I also know like the rest of you, it PROBABLY isn't good enough right now to win a championship. What do you guys think: one more very good shut down corner, plus someone much better to replace Ayodele: who I think has been overrated from day one. That play the other night where he got blew up by the GB fullback and Grant ran by him..........:banghead: It's my personal opinion that we lack some leadership on this defensive unit and have for quite sometime. Does anyone REALLY think that Junior Seau is a top flight LB anymore? I don't for a second. But he's serviceable AND a great leader....that's why Belicheat signed him. I think that's what we need personally......we have the talent, we need some more true leaders. BTW: I am THOROUGHLY enjoying our win from the other night: just watched it again last night...just pondering the defense that's all. One more thing: I'm like alot of you: we were SPOILED ROTTEN by that defense in the 90's: Haley, Tolbert, Maryland, Norton, Edwards, Smith, WOODY.........God they were fun to watch. But I have to realize that defenses like that only come along once every 20-30 years, if that.

The D is starting to really bring the pressure and I like what they are doing with the secondary in obvious passing situations.

We need one young CB to bring in who can start in a year or so. Reeves and Jones are not starting material. At least not on a D of a championship team. Other then that we are set. Our LBs are as good as you can get without high picks or big FA money. Our line is fine.

Guess we'll see about that. Right now they're on the D of an 11-1 team. I'll take it.

we need a couple more pieces to be truly dominant:

Defense: another starting corner and a stud safety who's got some wheels.

Offense: Larry Fitzgerald and a stud running back - possibly Michael Burner Turner...

we add 4 pieces like this in the off-season - and look out... no one will be able to play w/ us.

We are getting better and better at rushing the passer, but teams are going to pass against this defense sometimes. That's just the way it is.

Yeah and so is Bobby Carpenter. Does't mean anything. I'm content with their play but I don't think its starting quality.

I agree with the OP. I see flashes of '92 with our depth and youth at D-line. We haven't even reached our full potential yet. The only reason GB had some success is the jolt a new QB gave them that we hadn't schemed for. I feel like Wade had the D 100% prepared for Favre.

Imagine this. We've yet to start our top 2 corners alongside each other all year and we're 11-1. The silver lining is the experience our young corners have gained.

What's exciting is that all those 2005 draft picks and young guys are starting to come into their own along the front seven. Newman is peaking and in his prime. Henry should be getting healthy. Hamlin is a stabilizing force at centerfield and brings attitude and leadership. We're rounding into championship form and although we're not quite '92's #1 unit defensively, our offense is much more potent.

The Cowboys defense of the early 90s was good, but not one of the league greats. People really exaggerate them looking back with rose-colored glasses.

A lot of our defensive success had to do with our offense going on long, time-consuming drives. The running game just pounded people into submission.

But, we never had two 10+ sack guys. Kevin Smith and Larry Brown would not start for our current team, esp after Smith's injury. And they were not huge turnover machines. Woody was good, above average, but again not a dominant player. We had two dominant players on D -- Haley and Deion, and we didn't have Deion for most of that run.

Our D was good, but it didn't scare people. And it shouldn't have. The D we have now is not quite as good, but it scares people more.

I hate to go down this road again, but it was a big mistake keeping Jones over Glenn. I have no problem with getting Reeves involved he has done pretty well, but its hard for me to believe Jones is better in coverage then Glenn. The way teams are spreading Dallas out and given the injuries that extra depth would of been nice. Especially since we are still $6 million under the CAP.

I wouldnt mind seeing us make a trade for another CB.

So if we win it all this year, does Carpenter get a ring?

I don't think our defense is good enough today to stop the Patriots. I think it is good enough to stop (or limit) everyone else. There's some more football to play. We'll see.

Unlike last year, the defense appears to be getting better and better. Whose not to say the Pats didnt peak too early.

I like the idea of picking up a quality CB in the middle rounds of the draft this year. Someone to give Reeves a run for his money.

but on 1 or 2 instances we were ranked #1 in the league defensively during those 90s SB years.....

of course, they base all that nonsense on yardage....

I wish there was a formula that calculated yardage, pts allowed (strictly by defense), turnovers, sacks, completion %, yards per completion, yards per rush attempt, and defensive pts scored (TDs and safeties).....I think this would be the only true way to find the top defense in the league.

right now the only 2 negatives I see with our defense are penalties and poor tackling. Both can be corrected with focus, discipline, and practice......

I am especially upset with the 3rd down penalties that seem to allow opponents to continue on drives that result in points....such as in all the first half scoring drives for the Packers.

It frustrates me how they play solid defense on 1st and 2nd down, and then have a bonehead penalty on 3rd down that keeps the drive alive.

So if they can stop committing these stupid penalties and shore up the tackling, I don't see how any team can beat us.......even the vaunted New England Cheatriots.

Actually Kevin Burnett is Ayodele's backup and he spends a lot of time on the field in various packages. Gotta wonder if he soon replaces Ayodele as the starter or whether he's too vablue in our packages to start.

I do think we need use a high draft pick on a CB who can make an impact in his rookie season when Henry or Newman got injuried. It will happen and I don't want to rely on Reeves & Jones again.
