They are both in their third year, so I don't know if they would have developed enough to stay beyond their rookie deals. They needed to take huge steps this year and only took baby steps. Now, I thought Joseph was quite good in the preseason games, but in the camp footage, he was constantly getting beat. I'm sure that was a factor in the decision. At linebacker, I thought Harper outplayed Cox. Might could have kept them both because of the depth issues there, but we clearly think more of the safety/linebacker hybrids than we do Cox.
Don't get me wrong, none of the player cut by Dallas would make a big difference in the long run. They are all just back or backups to backups. But everyone was high on Cox when he was selected in the draft. Most thought he would be gone earlier. I think the injury set him back and he never came back from that. We will have to see how they turn out in a couple of years. But I will be shocked if any of them turn out to be star players.

I think Cox should serve as a good lesson for us on draft day. He's another one of those players that many fans were happy to get in the fourth round because some draft pundits rated him higher. His problem in college was that while he was good in coverage, he was not good against the run (probably because of poor diagnostic ability). Some players overcome that, but he hasn't ... maybe because of the injury setback or maybe because that's who he is. The physical skills are there, but the mental acumen does not appear to be. Given a limited diagnostic role, he might can excel, but there are not too many LB roles where read and recognition skills are not vital.

He was on the up swing until the injury and then he just got buried after. I believe he was considered a steal where we got him

Can't really blame him. He got leaped here by Clark and Harper, who were both taken later than he was. Probably looking for somewhere where he feels he'd be given more of a chance to compete.
Do you think he wasn't given a chance?

I don't think we just elevated Clark over him because we liked Clark more. Remember that Clark did not have a preseason last year. There was no reason (draft status, health, etc.) for Clark to end up ahead of Cox, but when Barr was injured, we turned to Clark to step in.

I don't think we decided to sign Barr last year because we wanted a veteran. I think we signed Barr because Cox had not shown proficiency in understanding his assignments. He did not show that he was ready to step up.

Same thing with Harper. We didn't keep Harper over Cox for any preferential reason. We kept Harper because he was the better linebacker. Cox was a fourth-round pick. Harper was a sixth. If anything, preference would have gone to Cox.

I don't know. He had not earned much playing time before the injury. I think the potential was there and he flashed it at times, but the proficiency was not. I think the proficiency is still not. Raw talent helps him overcome some of that and was the reason why he was a steal.

I just think he didn't show himself to be good enough. I never watched him and thought "hey, he is a really good player ." Maybe a change of scenery does him good.
