Updated my mock based on first looks at a few players post-combine that I'd never really looked at before. Fragel and Smith were the two that I hadn't really seen much of that look like really interesting possibilities for us.
1 Jonathan Cooper – LG – North Carolina
The more I watch his workout and the more I see him, the more I feel like he's the right pick. I'd be sorely tested if Richardson, Floyd or one of the pass rushers fell, but the more I think about it, the more I become convinced that Kiffin watches more Ratliff, Lissemore and Hatcher and comes to the conclusion that this is not a dire need that should outstrip value. Lane Johnson is a real possibility and alternative.
2 Tank Carradine – SDE – Florida State
The number of solid Round 1-3 defensive linemen means that people are going to fall, and if people fall, it certainly doesn’t bode well for Carradine rising too much, even if he proves that the injuries aren’t a big deal. Immediately steps in as a prototype strong-side end. Can't imagine we don't take a defensive player with at least one of our top 2 picks.
3 Reid Fragel - RT - Ohio State
Impressed by the workout and honestly hadn't spent any time watching Ohio State or this guy in particular. NFLDS has him in the 5th still, but I don't think he lasts past Round 3. Watch a game or two and tell me he's less clean than Lane Johnson. He's just not as athletic, clearly, but the gap isn't huge. A little bit T-Rex for a right tackle, but still reasonable length. I've only watched him in 2 1/2 games at this point so I may be missing the miserable performances, but what I've seen so far looks better than I expected.
4 Chase Thomas - OLB - Stanford
My mancrush on Thomas is well-documented. I maintain he would be an effective strong-side linebacker in an attacking 43 or Tampa scheme and that he has enough versatility to take snaps at rush end in obvious passing downs.
5 Duke Williams - FS/SS - Nevada
Early college DUI might scare us off, but I still feel like Duke is among the most underrated DBs in the draft. He's fluid like a corner (since he played a lot of corner) but more physical than you'd expect for his size. No idea why he's not being talked about in the late 2nd - competition? Off the field issues? I loved Duke Williams before the combine and still love him now.
6 Jared Smith – DT – New Hampshire
Some have been clued into him for a while, but there just isn’t enough video for anyone but scouts to really know what he is. I certainly don’t watch any NH football. He showed a bit at the Texas vs. The Nation game (there are a few 1v1 clips in OL/DL drills on YouTube if you don’t have the game DVRd – I also think you may be able to get it on demand from FSSW), but the combine showed exactly that the NFL combine entry says: this guy is Sean Lissemore with a bit more short area quickness and agility.
