Anthony Davis, Burnett, and Spikes

I'd take that and run.

Davis and Burnett would be damn fine. Spikes, no thanks though.

Spikes is way too slow. I'm not real big on 40 times, but a 5 second 40 is just ridiculous for a linebacker. There are offensive tackles who can run faster than that. He would get torched in coverage.

I'd be very happy with that.

He plays faster than that, and you can't overlook his production. Plus in the 3rd?

Me too....at least w/ the 1st pick.

I know some will disagree, but I think Anthony Davis will be the real deal.

I have seen some other mock drafts with Dallas taking Anthony Davis, I would be more than happy with that selection.

NFL.com overview: Davis is a prototypical left tackle in that he is a good foot athlete and has bulk as well as long arms that allow him to get a fit and control opponents as he steers them on by the pocket. He is not a natural knee bender and will let his pads get too far forward as he extends to sustain his blocks. He can slide and shuffle with an edge rusher and has the body control and foot agility to react and adjust to counter moves. He has shown a tendency to gain too much weight and will need to be monitored. He has strong hands and upper body and can swallow opponents up on the run block but does not finish his blocks off as much as he could. He will need some time to develop but could end up as a starting left tackle in a couple of years.

At 6'5" 323 that is a big man

Even before he ran I read a lot of people thought he was a 4.85 guy. Like I said I'm not big on 40 times, but I think he's just too slow to succeed in the NFL. Being projected as a 4.85 and then running a 5 shows that he isn't a fast player, or even below average speed.

I do know a lot of people are high on him though.

I know that Spikes times very poorly but I have to believe that something is wrong here. I mean, this is a player that over the past 3 seasons has posted the following:

2007: 131 Tkls
2008: 93 Tkls
2009: 68 (limited action).

That's very good production in any league but we're not talking about any league here. We're talking about the SEC where they run about as close to an NFL type running game as you can get. I do understand the fears about his speed and if he were to be in a situation where he could get locked into covering a TE like Witten down the seem, he's be toast but I think he's much better then most people are giving him credit for. This is a guy who was considered the best player, by many, on the entire Gators squad.

I think he is a smart player who reads plays very well and knows where he needs to be and does not rely on speed. I think he is going to be good ILB or MLB

For me, the big issue with Spikes would be that he's going to be a 2 down LB in the NFL. That means we'll have to have coverage type LB(s) when we take him out, and that's a roster space. Maybe it's not a big deal in the scheme of things . . . . and maybe in the 3rd or 4th round it's great value. I don't know.

But my preference would be to get an ILB who has the athletic ability to play all 3 downs - like hopefully J Williams will be able to in the very near future.

I think a guy like S Lee could be a 3 down LB, for example, but he's probably a Round 2 pick.

For you avid college football followers out there. How does Spikes compare to Kai Parham. Both had big stats and both ran slow 40's. That is all I know about them. I remember hearing Parham name a lot and then he had the slow 40 and wasn't drafted. The Cowboys signed him and he didn't do much in pre-season as was cut early. What makes Spikes different?

I can barely remember Parham to be honest, but I think Spikes was a more productive player overall. Parham played on Groh's defense with Canty and Ahmad Brooks among others and possibly benefitted from the cast.

Florida has a talented defense as well, but I think Spikes is a more instinctual "football player". He just can't run. I envision him being another Bradie James type.

Fair question. I think Parham was probably a bit stiffer and probably not as instinctive a player but I don't know. I think Parham came out in like 05 or so, I can't recall. Either way, I think it is a fair question to ask. Perhaps somebody with a better recollection of him can chime in.

Goose on Norm's show today said Spikes is a good 3-4 ILB and he won't make it to our 3rd round pick.

I was just curious so I looked back at the 06' season. I only remember the guy because he was interviewed on Sirius NFL radio a few times before and after he ran. They were pumping him up to still go in round 3 even after he ran. Just sounded a little similar to Spikes. I was just curious to see what the difference between the two was. I guess it is the off-season and I am just thinking about what makes a difference in guys with the same measurables. I guess instincts, anticipation, tendency/film study all has something to do with it, but athleticism is the top thing I would think in most cases.

Full Name: Kai Parham School: Virginia Pos: OLB

Ht: 6-3 Wt: 256 40: 5.05 Year: 4Jr

Bio: Led the team in tackles as a junior posting 103/14.5/8.5. Sophomore totals included 80/11/2 after 89 tackles as a freshman when he broke into the starting line-up.

Pos: Forceful linebacker best in the box. Stacks well against the run, and brings opponents down at the point of contact. Forces the action up the field, is rarely off his feet and quickly changes direction. Gets depth on drops in zone coverage and is effective facing the action.

Neg: Not explosive or very quick. Lacks speed to the sidelines and overall playing range. Performed poorly at the combine.

Analysis: Potentially a strong-side linebacker or inside defender in a 34 alignment, Parham is best playing downhill. Lack of speed limits him to specific systems.

Kai Parham ILB 6'3 256 Virginia Jr.
By: Robert Davis

Kai Parham left Virginia after three standout seasons for the Cavaliers. As a redshirt freshman in 2003, Parham earned Freshman All-American honors after racking up 89 tackles, seven for loss, and one sack. He followed that up with another solid campaign, finishing the year with 80 tackles, 11 for loss, and two sacks. Parham blew up this year and posted career highs across the board on his way to All ACC honors. He had 103 tackles, 15 for loss, and nine sacks as a junior.

Parham is the prototypical run stuffing linebacker. He is very aggressive when he reads a run play and immediately moves forward. With his bulk and strength, he can weed through traffic and get to the ball carrier. Once he arrives on the action, players rarely escape his grasp. Parham also showed the ability to blitz and shoot gaps this year, notching nine sacks. Even though he has only played three seasons, he has a ton of experience. That experience also comes in a 3-4 defense, which has become popular of late.

While he is a good athlete, Parham does not have great speed. He is not as slow as his 5.03 40 at the combine says, but he lacks great speed inside. His lack of speed also hinders his ability to turn and cover, because he cannot keep up with players down the field.

Kai Parham is an excellent run stuffing linebacker. His coverage skills leave something to be desired, but he will be a great two down player at the next level. His 40 time at the combine hurt his stock a little, but he is still one of the top inside linebackers available. He could hear his name called at some point in the third round, but if he falls to Day Two, could be one of the steals of the draft.

Just got a feeling Spikes will not work out in the NFL. I looked at some footage of him last year and damn he just looks slow on some plays.

He's going to get torn up in the NFL. EVERYONE is fast in the NFL.
