Change the date range to start in 1999 and go to current date.

Boy there are some gems in there!

I realized Jerry loves trading draft picks for WR's

A 3rd round pick for James McKinight?:bang2:

McKnight was a good player but we only kept him for one year. The timing of the trade was the real issue as he was due to become a FA after that season and went on to play for Miami.

Our problem with WRs is that we can't seem to draft them well or develop them when we do (see Jimmy Smith and Antonio Bryant). so we are left trading for them or signing them as FAs. Even then we didn't seem to strike gold very often (See Anthony Miller & Ernie Mills) but our last few have done well for us (Keyshawn, Glenn, & Owens). The trades are the ones that kill us because we are giving up valuable picks for these guys (Galloway & Williams) and if they get hurt or don't produce then we are screwed.

Good post.

Jimmy Smith is a mystery to me though, I was too young to understand the specifics on his career here though - injuries right?

Glenn, Owens, and Keyshawn were good moves for us - instant production, no mystery. Galloway could've been the same way, freak injury - he has been great for TB. Would've loved to see a healthy Galloway at the end of Troy's career - just like I felt drafting Moss would save our franchise and Troy. Williams however, is a safe move - he's not going to fall off the face of the earth, and hes got a lot of pressure to have a good 2009 season. So we'll lsee.

Jimmy Smith was injuring plagued here and got real cross-ways with Jerry over IR and an injury settlement.

He then signed with Philly and never even made it out of training camp so he sat out 1994.

Jacksonville picked him up the next year.

Cowboys | Address Big Need
Sun, 22 Apr 2001 21:54:13 -0700
Jean-Jacques Taylor reports for the Dallas Morning News the Dallas Cowboys spent the second day of the NFL Draft addressing their biggest need - defense. The Cowboys spent four of their six picks on Sunday on defense, including three on defensive lineman. "The group of guys we took have a lot of upside," coach Dave Campo said. In their defense, the Cowboys need big defensive tackles and Daleroy Stewart and John Nix, drafted on Sunday, fit the bill. Stewart is 6-4 and 309 pounds while Nix is 6-1 and 313 pounds. Stewart is recovering from rotator cuff surgery and could start the season on the PUP list. Seeking a pass-rushing DE, the team selected Colston Weatherington in the seventh round.

I think the WR development was definitely slower for Jimmy Smith but Antonio Bryant was already a baller, he was just on a crappy team. I remember his final game as a rookie in DC when he lit up the secondary of the Commanders for ~170 yards receiving with Hutchinson throwing him the rock (wow, those were the days)... The Galloway trade was really just a bad move and he never really lived up to all the expectations and the 2000 season quickly became a disaster. Jones found out that the greatest show on turf would remain in St. Louis that year and Dallas would continue to decline. When Dallas got Glenn from Green Bay he became our diamond in the rough and he was a very productive WR.

Colston Weatherington went on to have a great career... in the Arena League.

The selection of Tony Dixon in the 2nd round remains one of the biggest head-scratchers of Jerry's reign. The guy was a scrub but Jerry had a woody for him so he took him way before anyone had him slotted. We needed help at DT desperately but passed on Shaun Rogers to take Dixon. Rogers has had weight issues but he has also been a starter and very productive, Dixon sucked and was out of the league after a few seasons without ever really doing much.

I'm w/ you on Chase Holbrook: 6'5 245 (good size). If he's there at the end of the 2nd day or even in FA after the draft, he'd be a neat guy to bring in. He's a gunslinger but plays smart ball. His INTs are a bit deceptive because NMSU (*ugh*) played from behind a lot and had to ditch the run so.

Though if Dallas decides to wait, there's always UTEP's Trevor Vittatoe in a couple of more years: 58TDs to 16INTs in 2 years as a starter in a very pass-happy offense. Not bad also considering he played the last 9 games of 2008 on 1.5 legs Plus he played at Euless Trinity so I'm sure he'd love to return to the DFW Metro area. :) (yes, i'm a total UTEP homer haha)

John Nix will always be a hero of mine.

In the Nix of time

Rookie DT helps Dallas recover, beat Commanders, 9-7

... A big play by rookie John Nix put Dallas in position to win.

Nix forced Washington running back Stephen Davis to fumble (recovered by defensive end Greg Ellis) with 2:40 left in the game.

"We have a lot of young guys on this team – that's not an excuse –and it's up to us to make a play when we get the chance," Nix said. "We've got a lot of spirit and a lot of rah-rah enthusiasm, but we have to make plays for us to win games."

Wright drove the Cowboys 59 yards in eight plays to set up Seder's game-winning kick. Dallas finished 386 yards on offense, including 211 on the ground.
