Lacewell has fond memories of ASU football

The winningest coach in Arkansas State University football history paid a visit to Paragould Country Club on Tuesday to play in the 25th annual ASU Golf Classic. As ASU’s head football coach from 1979 to 1989, Larry Lacewell compiled a record of 69-58-4. Lacewell later became the director of scouting for the Dallas Cowboys before retiring in 2004. He said the Cowboys still send game films to him and he attends training camp as well as the NFL combine. He said his official title in the Cowboys organization is “consultant to the president.”

“That just means that [Cowboys owner] Jerry Jones listens to me a little bit more than he used to,” Lacewell said with a laugh.
“I get a kick out of being here [in Northeast Arkansas] because everybody is interested in the Cowboys.”

Well, we knew Jerry cited his ability in scouting linebackers and his input into the Bruce Carter pick this year.

Not so sure this is a good thing.. Come on Jerry let this guy go.

We also know that sometimes Jerry can be loyal to a fault.

Still remember Lacewell's so-called SEC connections leading us to take Dwayne Goodrich the cb from Tennessee with our first pick. What a waste.

Lacewell knows his linebackers (Coakley, Godfrey and Dat?)

Jerry still relying on Lacewell, no real surprise. Jerry's never known anything about scouting or personnel. After Jimmy Johnson left Jerry relied on Lacewell and he's been listening to him ever since. Kind of explains our decade and a half drought.

I was aware of that as well.

This is just the first time I have ever heard of Larry Lacewell still having an official title and possibly a true voice in our personnel processes.

Previously I assumed it was just a case of Jerry Jones giving him a call and getting bits and pieces of advice here and there. If he has a title, he's obviously on the payroll, even as a "consultant to the president".

You were right the first time. He's Jerry's drinking buddy. They do talk football, but he does not over ride Ciskowski, Williams, or Stephen. He shares his opinions at times when asked. So does Barry Switzer, as evidenced by the Murray input they asked of him.

I've never liked it, but I don't see where there is damage being done to get scared of.

“The Cowboys topped [my career],” Lacewell said. “You don’t realize how they truly are America’s Team until you spend 15 years with them like I did.”
It didn't take me 15 years.

Larry Lacewell with an official consulting title in this organization should scare anyone. Bring a drinking buddy is a little different from being on the payroll.

The man is truly horrible (the track record speaks for itself) and should be far far away from Jerry Jones' ear.

So, are you on the record that Bruce Carter will be a bust then?

There is a distinct possibility. No player is a sure thing, especially one coming off of injury.

All I can say is that I have zero faith in Larry Lacewell's abilities to evaluate talent. He gets far too consumed in physical measureables and while he can spot athleticism, he has frequently missed the mark with intangibles. Carter has been described as an athletic marvel who lacks urgency, so he fits the profile.

Lacks urgency? I don't remember reading a single word about that.

Pro Football Weekly's (Nawrocki) scouting report uses that direct language. Yes, I acknowledge it is just one report.

Carter could be a hit, average or flop. It still would not lend much to suggesting his influence is a good thing. I would prefer he not be involved in any way, shape or form, "consulting" or not.

I don't have complete faith or lack of it in any man's ability to evaluate talent. Not yours, mine, Jerry's, or Lacewell's. No man walking the planet has ever been a football talent evaluating savant. Now, I agree with you that Lacewell has never given me warm fuzzies, but I find it kinda silly to be upset over a title and a comment when all evidence points to the fact that he has little to no role here other than if asked for input.

No player ever has been guaranteed success or failure and that includes Bruce Carter. Having the Lacewell touch on his profile means nothing in the long run other than a reason for some fans to wring hands and sweat.

No thanks.

Found it:

Notes: Also played basketball as a North Carolina prep, in addition to playing quarterback, running back and safety. Originally committed to North Carolina as part of the 2006 recruiting class, but had his knee scoped in April and took a greyshirt. Joined UNC for the ’07 season, starting 7-of-12 games on the strong side, and recorded 25 tackles, two for loss and zero sacks with three pass breakups and a blocked punt. Took ownership of the SLB spot in ’08 when he started all 13 games, notching 68-11-5 with two pass breakups and one interception (66-yard touchdown). Also was an impact special-teams player, leading the nation with five blocked kicks, four of which were punts, including three against Connecticut. Played through minor injuries against Virginia Tech (hamstring strain) and Boston College (ankle). Started all 13 games at the “Sam” in ’09 and totaled 65-7½-2 with two pass breakups and one interception (41-yard TD return against Georgia Southern). A Butkus Award finalist in ’10, he played in 11 games (10 starts) at the “Sam” and recorded 57-3½-2½ with two pass breakups, one interception, a forced fumble and a blocked kick. Did not start the season opener against LSU after being cleared the night before in an NCAA investigation. Missed the final two games of the season after tearing the ACL in his left knee Nov. 20 against North Carolina State. Team captain. Medically excluded from the Combine because of the knee.

Positives: Passes the eye test and worked out like a phenom prior to injury. Rare athlete with an explosive, quick-twitch, short-area burst and natural knee bend. Outstanding balance and lateral agility. Functions in space. Adept at slipping and avoiding blocks. Ranges to the sideline to track down ballcarriers. Can run and hit and shows burst to close and finish. Drops effortlessly into zone coverage and has loose hips to shadow backs and tight ends. Has special-teams value and stood out in this area — seven career blocked kicks.

Negatives: Lacks bulk. Not stout or physical at the point of attack — plays too soft and too many tackles come down the field. Overruns some plays. Lassos too many tackles and can do a better job squaring up ballcarriers. Does not take on blocks with force or accelerate off them. Has to be schemed free as a blitzer. Has a finesse temperament and lacks killer instinct — does not play violently. Inconsistent compete level and urgency — plays when he wants to. Lacks confidence and an innate feel for the game. Durability could be an issue.

Summary: Has very clear first-round athletic talent but could slide out of the first round coming off knee surgery. Converted from safety and still covers like a defensive back and has special traits in coverage. Fly-to-the-ball, finesse, run-around ’backer with exceptional physical tools who could be very productive as a 4-3 weak-side linebacker where his range and athletic ability would play best.

NFL projection: Top-50 pick.
