Every year people say the same thing and every year it doesn't work out quite like you hope.
Unless a guy or two really develops as an outside edge guy, the fact Collins and Paea work well inside will simply result in what we've gotten to date............ mediocre results in getting after the QB.
We better hope that Moore somehow finds what made him highly thought of years ago and Charlton develops quickly into a good edge guy.
And every year it's people like yourself telling us not to get our hopes up. At this time last year, we were told we were doomed because we had no QB. Zach Martin was going to bust. Oh noes Dez is injured!
It was only 2012 we had the worst defense in the league. I don't recall a whole lot of people saying it was roses and caviar when we had Mincey and Selvie as returning starters. Following 2013 after a bottom third result and a DLaw broken foot, we were given no chance in 2014. Since then we have had rosier predictions but that is because we have been winning.
Frankly every year what we actually get are the 8-8, sky is falling routine. Meanwhile we have more talent now than we have had in the past.
Collins did work out. Paea certainly looks rejuvenated returning to a 4-3. DLaw is healthy and playing well. Moore and Irving are suspended, not dead, and playing well. Charlton is improving steadily and consistently making plays when given an opportunity. We'll see if 98 and 99 can get healthy but they are talented.
We finally have the number of players to run a rotation. Early in the year we have DLaw, Mayowa, Charlton, Neal, and 98 at the least to rotate. Return Tapper, Moore, and Irving and we are plenty deep. Keep in mind that it is not going to be like last year when injuries to multiple players reduced us to only being able to run a 3 man line.
We don't need a dominant edge player that can beat double teams ie a pro bowl type. We don't need Charlton or anyone else to develop into that. It would certainly help but what we really need are several men who can beat single blocking. With how well the DT are playing it's going to be hard for the guards to help. The DE are going to get isolations and they need to beat their man.
And its important to remember that 4 sacks and 2 QB hits in a game is outstanding. That is on pace for 64 sacks in a year. There are only about 35 passing snaps in a game in today's NFL. With 4 starting DL with 140 snaps between them that means a 90% fail rate is outstanding performance.
