If we trade Ware to another team for a draft pick will we get back all $16 million of his 2014 cap hit toward the salary cap? I don't think we would get a pick in the top 2 rounds but someone who thinks they are close to the next level might give is something for him.

More importantly we need to stop mortgaging the future for today and even with him in there we were horrible. If we could get value for him we could start rebuilding a young defense quicker.

His contract (and lack of production/health issues) makes him completely un-tradeable.

If you cut him then he would certainly be picked up by someone. I can't imagine that everyone really thinks he is washed up. I think he is like Terrance Newman where he has 3-4 good years left once he gets healthy. I could see the contract being an issue but I think if I were a GM I'd try and get a 5th round pick for him and see if anyone bites.

You'd get back 7M in relief as there is some signing bonus amortization in there as well.

The problem is Ware has 53M over 4 years in salary left on the deal, and another 1M in roster bonuses. You can't expect anyone to take on that kind of deal and give up a pick along with it.

I was hoping :D

A trade is the same as a cut. There will be 8.5M of dead-money on the cap with either. Bonus money that already been paid but was prorated under the cap over multiple years always stays with the original team. Only the base salaries go to the new team.

No team would pay Ware his 12.25M salary which increases in future years if he was a free agent. They're definitely not going to trade picks for the right to pay his salary.

Thank you! This is something I didn't know.

Unless the new team restructures the contract. Dallas gets their cap savings either way. New team gets a player they believe that can help them.
nice thought from OP. But teams won't make the trade when they can negotiate a lesser deal as a FA. Ware will want $$$, but has less negotiating leverage as a FA, than a trade.

Ware also has ZERO guaranteed money and teams that need to spend to the cap next year might take a chance on a star player even for a year or two. They can always restructure his money to lessen the cap hit if that's is the way they needed to go. Could possibly get a middle pick, which would be better than an outright release.

Honestly I doubt Ware goes anywhere.
The chances of him having 15 sacks next year are much higher than the chances he is cut or traded.

That is a great point and something to really consider when building our roster for next year. There is a clause in the CBA that forces each team to meet a minimum amount of cap space being used. It is very high. Perhaps we could trade a couple of overpriced players to these teams. Maybe not someone like Ware. But others? Possibly.

If Ware isn't willing to take a $7M pay cut, the best thing to do is designate Ware a June 1st cap cut. Let him hit the open market. The Cowboys can choose to try to sign him for market price after June 1st if they like. And Ware is free to go wherever he likes.

I don't get the sudden "Ware is a bum, done, washed up, etc." talk coming from a lot of you guys.

If we cut him, 31 other teams will be lining up to try and get him.

The guy was injured for most of the year and didn't play in 3 games. It's his first "bad" season as a Cowboy...

how can i explain this so even the mundane understand. Ware is older now, which is fine, i hate the whole youth movement thing. Ware is not producing as a guy you want in his position to be doing. Instead of say "hitting the qb" he likes to run past him, get clogged up, run around the field. Which is great, but not particulary what we are looking for at his position. Now granted, a unicycle cooking baker would be awesome, but right now we want a simple cupcake and we arent getting pound cake for our dollar.

So move Ware along, shake his hand, declare feburary 30th Ware day and get someone whos going to kill the qb. Younger, faster, direct line im hoping and just in the back field and do damage.

sadly ..the great old lion is finished..

we need to cut ties with him, romo, austin,spencer,claiborne,carr,hatcher.... either way they can do it...just do it.

I think within your cake metaphor there's some good points.

My problem with this situation is that people think that it's so easy to replace a guy like that.

His 2013 performance is replaceable. Past years don't mean anything. You pay players on future potential, not past performance. To succeed in today's NFL, teams must have zero loyalty to their players.

It is hard to replace a player like the Ware from three or four years ago. The Level that the Ware currently plays at will not be hard to replace. Age and injuries has reduced Ware to a shell of his former self. There are many young players that had more production this year than Ware. It is sad, but it is time to say goodbye.

i agree whole heartidly, im not saying ANYONE we draft will have the same production. but i feel its time to start looking. I love Ware like any other fan, i studied on him before we drafted him and im not a draftnik. My take is that its time, if another team can benefit, have at it, good luck to both. Its time for Dallas to get a straight up qb / backfield wrecker and sadly that is not Ware anymore. I never listened to anyone who said not only Ware couldnt do it, but the evidence was on the field NOT in the stats, they started double teaming him early, they chipped at him and we all know Washingtons T williams flat out tackled him. I will defend Ware to the end. But that end has come with his time with Dallas, and the team needs a leader on that line, someone young who will grow with the team and know the culture but set the tune to the new dance Dallas should be doing, its time to bring the D to the Big D and start being feared again.
