Ware Draft Question

I dont really remember anything from this draft but do you think it would have been possible to get Ware and Merriman if we would have taken Merriman first then Ware with the later pick?

The Chargers were going to take whichever of the two we passed on with the very next pick. Would have been nice, but not possible.

This has been well covered today in another thread, but I'll assume you haven't read the other one.

The answer is no - Ware would have been gone.

Even if he had, we still likely would have drafted Spears because we didn't have the 3-4 style DE's to play in our new defense and Spears was a necessity.

I personally do... Many mocks had Dallas taking Ware at #20 with Merriman at #11... I don't think SD would have taken Ware and if they did Merriman is the better player...

It depends on the Mocks - those that didn't get updated often and weren't updated within 2-4 weeks of the draft may have had Ware going that low, but after the combine and after Ware had personal workouts for the teams everyone expected him to go higher than 20.

San Diego supposedly publically said they were going to take whichever player was still on the board between Ware and Merriman.

That is why I don't care for mock drafts. It's someones opinion on how they think the draft will go. I have never seen one that got every pick correct.

This joker has been throwing out all kinds of stuff today and hoping something sticks long enough to make himself look remotely intelligent.

There is NO way Ware would have lasted to 20. None.

It would have been nice if they could have traded up with pick 20 to a pick above 11 and gotten both, but that would have prevented us from getting a Burnett and possibly either Barber or Canty to boot.

What i'm upset at is Buffalo having a good second half of the season. Remember we got the 20th pick from Buffalo. They started the season like really bad and then did well in the second half. Everyone was counting on Buffalo giving us a top 10 pick. We could have got Merriman and Ware that way, but I doubt we would have gotten 2 pass rushing LBs.

Yeah I remember being mad when Buffalo started winning but I'll take the results.

There was no way that we were going to use two 1st round picks on LB's. There was absolutely no way that both would be available by pick #20 and we had a glaring need at DT that Spears filled nicely. I'm amazed at the short memory that folks have when remembering that draft. The Cowboys needed a serious upgrade on defense and the strength of that draft was in the areas that were selected by the cowboys. Merriman is playing well in SD, and I say goody for him. Ware is also playing well for our team and doing the shouldawouldacoulda dance is not productive. Either pick would have been just fine and it's time we simply acknowledged that. Had we seen Merriman picked, there would be those who would wonder about Ware. Marcus Spears represents real versatility at his position, as he can slide inside to DT in the 4-3 or to DE in the 3-4. Do yourselves a favour and really watch this guy play. He's a keeper .
