Carr will have to go in a couple years too.
It doesn't matter if Ware goes to a 3-4 team and has 16 sacks this year. 16 sacks is not worth the money he would have earned. We all want a super star, but a super star helps you most while still on his non-super star contract. The problem with guys like Ware is once you pay them the so called market rate for being the best, you severely limit your future and your present; it kills your depth and salary cap. It pushes most teams to gamble in the draft.
The absolute worst thing this team can do now is to try and find the next Ware in free agency or the draft. No, we are not desperate. The Cowboys killed their drafts for years trying to find the next Charles Haley, reaching for DE's, bringing in damaged free agents. You don't need a dominant pass rusher, and you certainly don't need to replace Ware's contract with another overpaid free agent. I wouldn't even want Peppers unless it was for a non-star contract. We do not now need to use our first round pick on a DE who is rated lower than another player.
I'll take a rotation of two decent young ends who get 5-6 sacks each this year. The tackle is still paramount in this defense. Sign some 2nd tier guys you can coach who can contribute and then draft best player available in the draft. That's how teams avoid lousy drafts. I would love to have Hatcher back, but let someone else overpay....don't use the money you saved with Ware to overpay Hatcher, Melton, or anyone else.
Relax folks, and pray that Jerry has finally learned that you build in the draft and fill holes in free agency without buying stars. Even if Carr has a much better year this year, we will need to ask him to take a salary cut or release him in another year or two. That's just the wrong way to run an NFL team unless you've won championships and are just trying to hold it together for another run.
