Im not a big stat guy but watching the game Sunday it seemed like Ware had alot of tackles made behind the line of scrimmage.

When checking the stats I couldnt find one for tackles for loss. Anyone know where to find this stat?

From charting the first half, he actually played well. He does seem to have fallen in love with the bull rush a bit, but he's been pretty good at it. I have him down for 6 plays in the first half where he got excellent penetration. 5 of those plays he forced Leftwich to throw earlier than he wanted to...the other play was on an end around to Matt Jones which resulted in a 6 yard loss.

It appears to me that they were very conscious of the run and didn't want him to lose his gap responsibility in order to get to Leftwich. I'd like to see him change his outside and inside pass rush moves up a bit...but he really appears to have quite well against Jacksonville.

One thing I noticed is that we kept him at LB in the nickel package and he'd line up alongside Ellis with Ratliff and some other player at DT (couldn't see who) and Hatcher at RDE.

He was credited with 1.

He may have caused a couple more as well by beating his man and forcing the RB to the outside.

I loved it when he bumped the receiver and damn near knocked him down. Last year he would let these guys release cleanly off the line of scrimmage he is not doing that now.

Here are all the plays listed with him in them. I show (2) tackles for a loss.

2-4-JAC42(12:59) B.Leftwich pass short left to G.Wrighster to JAX 41 for -1 yards (D.Ware).
1-10-JAC20(5:35) F.Taylor up the middle to JAX 20 for no gain (D.Ware).
1-10-50 (12:59) F.Taylor up the middle to DAL 45 for 5 yards (D.Ware).
1-10-DAL17(10:17) F.Taylor left tackle to DAL 15 for 2 yards (D.Ware).
2-10-DAL14(13:06) (Shotgun) B.Leftwich pass short left to F.Taylor to DAL 5 for 9 yards (A.Henry) [D.Ware].
1-10-JAC35(10:14) F.Taylor up the middle to JAX 34 for -1 yards (D.Ware).

Can you confirm who they left to block him? I felt like Merriman looked like a monster not only because the DL were disruptive, but for some reason Oakland felt it OK to block with an RB or TE.

On the other hand, I felt like Ware was going against a TE or LT the entire game.

Not trying to do a comparison or anything, but if it was the LT, then Ware's pressure is even more incredible.

In the first half he was primarily blocked by Barnes. When they went to the nickel, he'd be blocked by Williams with some help from Wrighster. On some running plays they'd have Kyle Brady on him (who weighs 280 lbs and is one of the best blocking TE's in the game). On one play they had a tailback block him on what was supposed to be a quick throw, but Ware completely bowled him over and Leftwich got rid of the ball and it was incomplete.

Hmmm. Interesting. Also, there was an end around to Matt Jones where Jones had to change his route and run wider around Ware who got great penetration. Ware got a hand on Jones and Jones lost his balance and was going to the ground right before Ayodele landed on him. It appears Ayodele got credited for the tackle for the loss, but in reality it was Ware that got Jones to fall to the ground.

So I'm not crazy. Ware got pressure going against a really good tackle and great blocking TE, whereas Merriman caused pressure by blowing up....LaMont Jordan.

Rich, could you tell who tried blocking Ware on the pass that Henry almost intercepted? Ware lifted him off his feet and drove him backward almost all the way to Leftwich IN THE AIR. I thought it was Wrighster, but I couldn't tell for sure.

As far as Ware being "in love" with the bull rush, he's probably been coached not to use the speed rush too much when it's not a passing down. so he doesn't run himself out of the play.

Not to mention that several of Merriman's teamates were beating him to the quarterback. Sacks are much easier when the quarterback runs right at you to get away from your teammates.

Ware's name in brackets means that the game statistician credited him with a "quarterback hurry" on the play. That's something new that will be listed in the GameBooks now. They're not an official stat, though, and they're different from what the team credits as quarterback pressures. The GameBook lists Ware and Ratliff with hurries (Ratliff's sack counts as a hurry). The Cowboys' coaches credited Ware with one and Ellis with one. But they don't credit a pressure on a sack, so Ratliff doesn't get one.

I'm going back home in a second, I'll re-check it when I get home.

I think this hits the fundamental issue on the head. SD gets pressure with their front 3. Those front three get after the QB and their LBs end up having the QB runing to their space rather than trying to avoid them. This takes nothing away from Merriman -- he's becoming a beast. But if you really want to credit someone for this it would be Jamal Williams. He's the best NT in the league -- teams always double and sometimes triple him. That opens up a lot.

That eastern block kid...Olshansky? is pretty fricking stout himself. I loved him out of college.

Castillo is really good as well - he dropped in the draft following his positive steroid test but he was a clear top 20 talent that year
