Ware sacked Aaron Rodgers on Sunday but since it was a busted play it doesn't count as a sack. Why is that?

It was a broken play and considered a run play. Can't get a sack on a run play.

He must have gotten back to the line of scrimmage somehow. Because it would be considered a sack if there was a loss on the play.

I didn't really understand why it wasn't a sack either. If he turns around and finds someone to throw it to, that's still a legal play, so why wouldn't the sack be legal.

But to be honest, I couldn't care less about Ware's sack numbers right now.

Busted plays are considered run plays.. so you can't recieve credit for a sack.


.. like someone else said, not that it matters because how many sacks Ware has is the last thing we need to worry about right now. Figuring out how to get him playing with fire and passion again is a much bigger concern of mine because he's in the same boat as the rest of the team right now.. a quitter who's playing with no heart at all.

because the QB wasn't back there passing. he was rushing with the ball and he was outside the pocket

I am pretty sure there was a situation, they even spoke about it being a bogus sack on local talk radio, Julius Peppers got credit for a sack back when he played for Carolina when he was simply the closest to the QB as he ran out of bounds behind the line of scrimmage. They counted it as a sack.

If it was a passing play where Peppers ran him out of bounds then it should have been a sack. That's always considered a sack.

The point on the Ware play was that Rodgers was running not passing. Now he probably does get credit for a tackle for loss--which imo is the most underrated stat in defensive football, but it shouldn't be a sack.

It's the equivalent of tackling a qb on a qb sneak. Even if he gets tackled behind the lines it doesn't count as a sack.

It's a judgement call by the officials. For all we know, that was supposed to be a play action pass and then it would've been a sack, but because the scorekeeper saw it as a botched run play it was not a sack. Same reason you don't get a sack if you stop a QB sneak for a loss.

I don't think it was ruled a botched run play. I think it was viewed as a run because Rogers realized immediately it was a busted play and didn't even make an effort to drop back into a passing mode, he just saw the bust and tried to run.

The o line was run blocking (going forward from Los) therefore considered a busted run play. No sacks are awarded on running plays.

It may well have been - with the botch you certainly can't say with any certaity that the intent was to pass.
