It was a simple enough question to DeMarcus Ware considering the changes the Cowboys made on defense, starting the hiring of 73-year old Monte Kiffin to replace Rob Ryan as defensive coordinator.

"When you have guy that comes in the age sometimes doesn't matter its the rebirth of having new guys, a new team and teaching you philosophy," Ware said. "With him coming in and teaching us a different deal, it fees like he has a new birth. So the age is not a problem. It's us learning what we need to do and doing it effectively."

"They are really really great coaches and have the heritage of playing the Tampa Two, playing different coverages, having great pass rush and guys that get pressure and get turnovers," Ware said. "That's what this defensive is predicated on. We had 16 turnovers last year and each team they have in the past have consistently gotten 35 to 40 turnovers. We are trying to get that."

"I'm real excited with the way that we are playing," Ware said. "Guy aren't thinking so much. They aren't a lot of mistakes. When we go through each day there is a chart we go through on how many mistakes we made, how many turnovers, how many missed plays. There aren't a lot of missed plays and lot of errors. we are making more plays and getting more turnovers. I think that is what we needed."

This looks like validation of my new-defense-is-to-get-takeaways-and-not-a-referrendum-on-Rob-Ryan argument.

It also may be what Ware needed after an injury-plagued season of a year ago when only 2.5 of his 11.5 sacks came in the last eight games of the season.

This is interesting. I wonder how the chart compares to last year's chart, if there was one.

Here's to hoping. I have high hopes, but I'm being cautiously optimistic.

One thing for sure is that the less you think the faster you play.

Well, Lovie's version was pressure and turnovers.

I am not suggesting a Madden trade, but I am a little surprised they haven't talked to Chicago about Peanut Tillman, considering it is looking like this is his last year in Chicago, and he can play FS. Look at his stats, thats what you want in the secondary.

Yeah, but there are two things working against a trade like that:
1. The Bears think that they are ready to contend for a title, it would be highly illogical to trade away the best player on their defense.
2. Having said that, the Bears would likely command more than he's worth (more than he's worth, taking his age into consideration).

Heard the same thing with Wade and Rob.

The defense was actually playing very well last year until all of our players started dropping like flies.

I do, however, really like Kiffin's defense and can't wait to see the 4-3 again.

There are so many question marks along the DL, which concerns me greatly, as this is a very DL-centric defense. But I cannot wait to see what guys like Carter and Lee do in this defense. There couldn't be two better fits.

Injuries will dictate the success or failure of this or any defensive scheme.

Unless you're the Bills, trying to run a 3-4 with a bunch of guys you drafted over the past 5 years to play a T2. Then it fails every time!

Tillman is a beast. I was just listening to his clip from the NFL's Arbitrary 100 last night and thinking what a cool dude he is, too.

Though, ours our unknown, but I have a feeling the team really likes what we've got in terms of young potential at S. Looking forward to seeing how that group performs in preseason.

There's no way that's true anyway. That's saying all teams have the talent to succeed defensively in whatever scheme they're in. They just have to stay healthy.

You need talent. Scheme only does so much. All teams do not have the talent to field a quality defense.

The new defense taking the thinking about of the equation for Ware as gets to do what he does best all the time: rush the quarterback.

I usually don't get upset at grammar abuses, especially on fan forums. However, it is Clarence's profession and vocation to write clearly to thousands of readers every day.

I understand his thought here, but man, does no one proof read this stuff?

Ive always thought the 3-4 asked players to do too many things, often things they weren't especially great at.

We had Spencer and Bradie James in coverage. Cover 2 really didn't help Roy Williams, we often didn't have the corners for Cover 1. Dropping Ware in coverage was a complete waste.

The only thing we did really well was have Ware pass rush, and have the line stop the run, but we've been eaten alive by the pass for years. And we kept asking college players to learn new positions coming out of school, which definitely set them back a year or two on top of coming into the nfl.

I'm not really feeling this. How can you tell all this from OTA's. I'm not drinking that kool-aid.

I have to wait and see how it looks on the field, when it matters, for six or seven games into the season to see what I feel about how the defense is doing.

Of course injuries, or hopefully the lack thereof, will be a big factor in rather this defense does well or not.

One thing I know about Kiffin and Rod Marinelli defense they know how to take the ball away. They have done so through out their careers. I fully expect them to get the best out of this defensive unit.

Thanks for being the first. I am hoping this was typed up on a phone last second or something. Otherwise, that is just awful writing and editing.

NO writer/author is beyond an editor.
