Link me to the thread if this has already been discussed...

Haven't rewatched the game yet (ughh) but the quick replay by ESPN during the game looked to me like Ware was not down by contact on his fumble recovery. But rather, his own exuberance. Refs blew the whistle to say otherwise and Ware eventually soon stopped running but my recollection is that he'd have scored easily had he continued.

So with the replay overturn on Witten's fumble was it also possible that the premature whistle on Ware could have been overturned resulting in a TD had Ware continued and in fact scored?

Certainly not feeling like we should've won, or all would be well had we, but that call was pretty pivotal based on what I saw. The announcers never questioned it.

Thoughts?

When the whistle is blown, the play is dead. Because a whistle stops play, nothing after that point can be considered "what would have happened" had the whistle not been blown.

I rewound the game right after that play and a Giants o-linemen looked like he pushed him in the back of his legs. He looked down to me.

I didn't think he was down by contact, either, but at that point I don't think anyone really cared about the game anymore.

Yet it turned out to be a critical play.

My buddy Tivo'ed it and he agrees with you, ... the Giants players barely tripped him up but he said Ware was down by contact.

Really? I'm admittedly fuzzy on this but I thought they somehow changed the rule because of the Hochuli mistake (Cutlers fumble versus the Chargers) from a couple years back.

Did the Giants have Witten's fumble in their position before the whistle blew? I thought they did not. The replays didn't take when the whistle was blown into account at all.

Maybe I need to research it myself cause I thought they changed that rule.

They changed it where you can challenge the fumble and possession if the whistle is blown, but if you gain possession any advancement doesn't count, it's where the ball was recovered at.

Whistle blew so there can be no advancement of the ball. They can award the ball to the defense on the recovery even if the whistle was premature but no advancement of the ball

Thanks guys. I was pretty sure something had changed. Guess it was immaterial in this case.
