I did a little research, but wanted to ask you guys. Was Brandon Carr the last big money (> $10mil/yr for multiple years) outside free agent? 10 years ago-yeesh. He was the best CB for many of his years here though everyone knew they had to pay top dollar to get him.

The resources of the team are very disorganized. They want to pay their own players for compensatory pick sake and draft justification. But I think that the other reason is they suck at researching outside free agents and know that they do. Which makes them wary of paying big money to outside free agents. I think that they also overvalue their own free agents and will overpay to keep things status quo.

yuuuuuup. Carr was the beginning of the end for our big spending. He was serviceable but he wasn't a game changer or dominant CB. and i think that's stuck with the Joneses ever since....or at least Stephen. why pay top tier money for low tier play. Not to mention we had a number of free agent busts before him and i also think we signed a crap ton of free agents that year and none really made a impact. Does Nate livings ring a bell to anyone? lol

Roy Williams is the real snake bite they are remembering. The Galloway trade too.

They do seem to over pay their own.

Or, why pay top dollar for mediocre talent if you are going to lose comp picks? This club will pay its own mediocre players top money if the alternatives in free agency don’t measure up. Combine that with almost 3 decades of next to no playoff success and free agents do not view the Cowboys program as a standard of excellence.

I think the kid gained a lot of clout after talking Jerry out of the Lynch and Manziel situations, and he doesn't want to risk being exposed. Re-signing their own mitigates that.

Carr probably influenced that in a big way.

Brandon Carr did not live up to the contract that he received here. But he was very serviceable and more importantly he didn't miss a game while he was here. He didn't get ints so much either. Was a good team mate by all accounts but that doesn't win championships. Yes, Car, Williams, Galloway, Wiley and others tainted Stephen Jones view of free agents no doubt.

The problem was less Brandon Carr and more with the various DCs he played under.
He was noted for his man coverage skills (as was Mo Claiborne) and the year after he was signed (and Claiborne drafted) they hired Kiffin and Marinelli who were noted for their zone defense.
Nobody on those defenses did much of anything (Jeff Heath led the defense with two interceptions, two years in a row).
So if you draft/sign a player for their particular skills, you better have a DC that best uses those skills.
Jerry/Stephen take note.

I'd attribute it more to preferring to spread the available CAP to a number of "Just above JAG level" rather than one elite and JAGs.
When you go into an off season with needs at every unit and in $21m in CAP deficit your options are limited.
To be positive our CAP dilemma is improving (so long as we don't totally write off 2025 with Void contracts).
All that said, yep i agree Jerry likes to throw her wad at his superstar mates...we need an independent GM to make football rather than backpage decisions.
