Roger Staubach hung up the cleats.

Seems like yesterday. Trivia: who was the first person he called after making the decision?

I actually thought he retired on the 30th, the same day my maternal grandmother died. On the 31st (my sister's birthday) I was traveling from CA to VA for her funeral. I changed planes in Chicago and spotted the Tribune (I think) and Captain America took not only the headline, but a good part of the front page. He dominated the other papers too. Nothing but praise for his skills as a player and his graciousness as a man. I swear if I still had that paper I'd send it to Dez Bryant and tell him this is who you should be emulating, not some rookie jailbird with his pants at his knees so he can be easily sodimized by the other convicts...

This is purely a guess...Danny White to tell him it was his team.

Correctamundo.
I figured it had to be something classy. Roger was that and more.

Drew Pearson on watching it on TV.

"I couldn't even go to his press conference, because I didn't want the whole world to see me crying and broken up. I did watch it on TV, and I watched it with tears in my eyes and sadness in my heart, because I didn't want to see him go."

Me too Drew, me too.

Makes me sad that I never got to see him play.

Not many people in the history of the planet have led more successful lives than that man. He not only succeeds in literally every single endeavor, he excels.

Very sad day for me. JMO but that decision cost us at least one more super bowl victory.

It sure was. I was a freshman in School. I remember riding home with some older kids that had their licences, had the radio on and it was announced. Real empty feeling . I remember I kept thinking......" Were NEVER ever gonna get another great QB".... Boy was I wrong . Danny White, Troy Aikman, and Now Romo. But..............none of them are Roger. No one ever will be either.

Which leads me into my favorite Cowboys vid. US oldtimers Like seeing the players from our youth!....: )

Remember that country song "Nineteen 80 something" Had a line in it that said...." I was Roger Staubach in my back yard" ? Never a truer line ever written! I REALLY was Roger in my back yard! Along with millions of other kids at the time.

I dont know if any other folks feel this way. But there was something different about those 70,s and 80,s teams. You just had this feeling like.......You were rooting for the " good guys". IMO that feeling has to be attributed to Coach Landry and the kind of Organization he ran.

Exactly. So that would make the Steelers the bad guys.

Wow, I'm such a wimp I cannot even watch the video.

One of my childhood heroes right there, Roger the Dodger. Man, 31 years! Time flies like an arrow, fruit flies like a banana.

True that. Thank God for video. Even though I didn't watch him play I'm still able to watch alot of his old games and see the greatness that was Roger Staubach.

I've always wondered if Danny was elated or scared ****less when he got the news. Maybe a little of both.

I second that. It hurt for me because I had only been watching the Cowboys since SB 12 and then he retires. I had always thought he had it in him to go a few more years. So I missed a few of his great plays and didn't get to see Staubach in his earlier years. He didn't disappoint from what I did see though.
