Was Taco Charlton the smartest move the Cowboys made this off-season?

Cap crunch Taco?

If he turns out to be a Ellis like player, I'd call that a win. You aren't not going to get Reggie White type of player picking at 28 unless there are some off field/injury issues.

Well...Since hearing we are already trying to convert him into a speed rusher from the right side...I can see we are already getting ready to ruin another player. His best position was LDE. And while scouting him...the first thing I noticed was...he was constantly late coming off the ball. If he can get better there...then maybe you will see improvement. But from my experience...either a guy has that get off or he doesn't. That isn't something you can coach up....even for the great Marinellie.

Or maybe having the best coach and quarterback in the history of the game helps to not have (or need) a war daddy.

No doubt, but they are part of that system too. Brady has already admitted that.....

Russell Maryland was a quality player.

People want to claim not resigning the secondary players was the smartest move but that seems more out of necessity. Thanks to the fine work of Stephen Jones this team never has any cap space. You don't get any atta boys when you simply can't afford to make that mistake.

Dumbest move by far was allowing Leary to walk. That's one player where you do create the room to tag for a year. If you think you can compete for a title then why not make that move and strengthen what is already the team strength? Smith Leary Frederick Martin Collins with a 2nd year Zeke? That's going all out to win. Instead we're left to hope schlubs like Cooper, Green or Bell can be mediocre. Makes no sense.
a debatable question and not unreasonable not I assume we known whose on the roster

Side note, but Maryland gets such a pass from Cowboys fans because the teams he was on won Superbowls. He ought to have been considered a huge gaffe by the team. Instead he flies under the radar where guy's like Ellis and Spencer get regularly and unreasonably lambasted.

Idk... I think Spencer deserves most of his lambasting. Dude, was terrible at setting the edge. I have always called
him "Almost Anthony" and that is the way he will be remembered. Seemed to be one or two steps away from
actually making a play.

On the other hand, Ellis was a pro... solid player year in year out. Unfairly lambasted because Jerry passed over Moss.

I remember Maryland was told he wasn't getting a "1st pick overall" type of contract.

Maybe but I think the FO realized signing Leary might mean martin walking. It might have been different if Free retired before FA but he didn't, in this day and age you can only have so many high dollar contracts on the OL

Tagging Leary wouldn't have had any effect on re-signing Martin.

So then you are in a totally different boat next year trying to re-sign Leary and Martin together????
The hope is that we re-sign Martin this year before the season starts, as we have with TFred and TSmith

Yes right now but if we had re-signed Leary there probably would not be enough money to sign Martin. Tagging Leary would have taken most of the cap space we have plus what Romo's release would have given us.

This is true. He would have had better numbers without that high ankle sprain. I'm impressed that he played through it. It shows me he has heart.

Michigan fan myself, I really liked Taco, and was really glad they got Lewis, I thought he was more important to M defense than Peppers, but Peppers was way more important for team, he was so versatile.

Not sure. We run the 2 LB scheme a lot. Maybe Jaylon isn't up to it yet. If he is do you really want to sit your #1 pick that much?

I'll just add that I think we're in a multi year rebuild on defense.

I'm a little worried about the LB position, but I totally agree. This team has the numbers at DB to churn out enough different nickel packages to give offenses fits, assuming the rookies are the types of players we hope they are.

That said, between Jaylon's uncertainty and Lee's age, there's a good chance LB will be the top priority for this team next year. The odds of neither of those things being an issue next year are just way too slim.

Taco looks like a bust on tape and his body language looks bad too. Looks like a super soft player to me. Gosh I hope I'm wrong.
