Was the Jaylon Smith cut to make room for someone?

I have to admit, I was surprised by the team cutting Jaylon Smith. They seemed to cut him after his level of play had been improving. He was no longer the starter, but he was making some plays as a rotational player. It makes me wonder if the team has been in hushed talks with a free agent. If that's the case, I have no earthly clue who.

Or was it as simple as his play wasn't up to snuff and someone on the PS should move up? If that's the case, why didn't he simply not make the roster after preseason?

This is definitely a surprising move, at least it is to me.

No. The Jaylon cut was to get rid of the risk of more cap hit via injury guarantees at the expense of a player that's severely underperforming his contract to the point that he might have been hurting his team with his play.

Looking forward to seeing how Jabril Cox fares.
Was bugging me a bit that he wasn't getting many snaps after looking so good in preseason.

Listening to MM, I would think getting him more involved was a big part of the decision.

If the offset language works the way I understand it, then it makes complete sense, and I also agree with AR about the competence of the GB FO.

DQ ran out of patience for Jaylon to improve. We drafted well and acquired too much talent in FA to continue to allow Jaylon to be a progress stopper. We have Keanu Neal and Jabril Cox that fill his role. When it came time to bring this move to Jerry so he could execute it, his words at training camp bit him in the butt, We know Jerry loves Jaylon but he said if he could do something that would get him to a Super Bowl, he would do it. DQ just had to remind him of those words and explain having Neal or Cox in Jaylon's space, the defense will be closer to a Super Bowl.

It sure didn't hurt that they have an extra roster spot for when players return from covid, ir, nfi.

Neal's coming off the covid list.

I do think all the IR players coming back soon was a factor of many.
