Bizarre Racial Firestorm Surrounding McNabb’s Benching


The Eagles are heading to DC this week to face a Commanders team that has spent its bye week mired in controversy over Donovan McNabb’s last minute benching against Detroit. And now, the debate over McNabb has taken an astonishing and utterly unneeded detour into the land of racial flame warring.

Last week, both Mike Wilbon and David Aldridge essentially warned Mike Shanahan that they could pull the race card at any second in the matter. Former Georgetown coach and confused old man John Thompson also chimed in, saying he didn’t think of the situation racially until someone else did, which totally made him think of it racially. And now, the coup de gras: John Feinstein saying the matter should cost Shanahan his job. His job!

"I think there's racial coding going on here, and it's my belief that that kind of behavior is worth firing a coach for. Dan Snyder's not gonna do it, but I think it's out of control."

Clarence Hill (FWST) essentially alluded to something like this on twitter after the game and after Shanahan's comments.

Mentioned that because Shanahan said that it had to do with McNabb not knowing how to run the 2min offense better than Rex that he's basically saying McNabb is dumb. Added how dumb used to be the reason why teams never played black quarterbacks at one point.

Eh, I think it's all silly. But if Shanny keeps pulling stunts like he did, it'll certainly be brought up again.

Race only exists in the newsrooms and teachers lounges on college campuses. It doesn't exist at all in sports anymore. I guarantee you about 98% of the men in the NFL don't even see black or white. They see players and performance.

If I recall correctly ESPN threw up a stat showing the top lowest QB ratings in the 4th quarter and McNabb was 3rd on the list. All those years in Philly dumping 9000 screen passes to Westbrook in Reid's no run offense inflated this guys numbers. 4 NFC championship games and 1 superbowl do not matter to me. This guy is a champion 1st and 2nd down QB but comes up short consistently on 3rd down and late in games. I do not associate the word comeback with McNabb.

With that said...I would think McNabb is the better athlete then sexy Rexy Grossman. You put your best athlete on the field don't you?

This is dumb on all levels. Yes, he traded a second round pick for a guy, called him a franchise QB, and benched him with 2 minutes left half way through the season... BECAUSE HE'S RACIST.

Honestly, as an Eagles fan I can tell you a lot of the time it wasn't McNabb that let us down. There were a ton of times he lead us back only for our defense to give up the lead again, and then we weren't able to regain the lead or time had expired. Also, there were plenty of times he had the ball in the right spot and they either dropped it or tipped it into the defenders hands. But even with those things aside, he really never was a great comeback QB.
