Also, if you want to try to go up inside the Washington Monument, you can request tickets in advance here:

http://www.nps.gov/wamo/index.htm

They're free but there is a postage fee I think. You can always walk up to the ticket office for the Monument and try to get one (or more) on the spot but they are usually gone gone gone... I have an advantage there because I just trundle over there during lunch, in winter when no tourists are around, and get a ticket anytime :)

Crap... already sold out...

My wife is a big history buff so we're going to DC next month. I've been several times on business but it's been 20+ years...

We're obviously gonna do the expected things; The Mall, Smithsonian, Arlington National Cemetery, 1600 Penn etc...

I'm interested in knowing about the "Don't Miss" things (attractions, restaurants etc...) from people that live in or frequent the area. We will be there for 5 nights and we will not have a car...

Thanks in advance!!!

I hear you can jump a fence pretty easily if you're wanting to check out the White House without spending the money for a tour. Just make sure you and your better half have some good running shoes.

They're about to put spikes up

Had another thought for you: For transportation, it's not just the metro. Uber has really taken off in this area, so if you have the Uber app you are set. They are cheaper than taxis and you do not tip the driver. They're everywhere... I take Uber usually twice a week when I stay out at a bar late...

Okay, in downtown DC, close to Gallery Place area, all very close to each other - Madam Toussad's, Ford Theater where Lincoln got shot, and the house across the street where he died, and the Spy Museum. Also the Newseum, and the Holocaust Museum, which is next door to the Treasury tour.

I can't recommend the newer Air & Space Museum (Udvar-Hazy Center) at Dulles enough. I visited last year for the first time (after many trips to D.C. over the years).

If you like aircraft, this museum is amazing. The Shuttle Discovery, an SR-71 Blackbird (the one that set speed records on its final flight - L.A. to D.C. at 2144 mph, which took all of 64 minutes and 20 seconds), a Concorde, and the Enola Gay.

THE frickin' Enola Gay!

Aaaaand they apparently have the bestest IMAX theater on this side of the Mississippi... some kind of new dual projection system with a ramped up audio addition as well... "immersive audio" or something. It's totally brand new, just opened back up in time for the new Avengers film I think, or shortly before...have not been there myself recently.
