just summarizing the column, it was headlined by the Smoot signing but had info on Davis

-- says he is going home to Texas tonight to think about his decision between Dallas and Washington

-- says he was told he'd be a LG in Washington, but Dallas said it could be RT or RG

-- said the position played has no bearing on his decision

-- said Washington was a "good fit" for him

-- WP article says money was the main reason he left Dallas w/o a deal...wants a deal similar to or more than dockery just got..Skins reportedly offered Dockery a 3yr deal for about 12mils...Gibbs sounded like he was shocked Dockery got the deal he did

wow the fact alone that he is leaving the skins without signing a contract and taking into account that it is down to dallas and washington leads me to believe he will be a cowboy...just my assumption tho

It also makes me feel like we are in the drivers seat.

Washington can't compete with the salary we can give him, and noone else is interested. If we want him, he's ours.

Whether that's a good thing or not remains to be seen.

If Colombo was already signed (as he should have been) we probably wouldn't be in this situation.

Most likely that is true. Any word what he was asking yet?

Makes sense that we're letting him see what he can get.

Then, he can come back and tell us. If we can match it, we will. If not, que sera, sera...

True....but so far, they've all been ridiculous contracts.

And it's hard to really blame Columbo. He's really lucky to be playing at all after the injury he suffered. He, more than most other players, realizes how football can be taken away from you quickly.

But still, any contract he gets is still more than what most of us will see in a lifetime.

Reading that article it's almost like the Redstinks are conceeding Davis to the Cowboys.

I agree if he was leaning towards washington I doubt he would fly back to Dallas tonight. He will probably sign here tommorrow

With those other signings, I don't think they really ever had the money to compete with the Cowboys. Even at a moderate deal.(moderate in this market anyway)

I find it hard to believe that Leonard Davis is going to be anywhere but Dallas next year. That's nothing more than a hunch, but I'm betting that a deal gets done there because both parties will want it...

Also, I'm curious as to how exactly that NFL contracts work. I mean, I know that all bonus money is the players, and it is spread out evenly over the course of the deal. We see a lot of huge numbers sometimes, but because the player will never see the last two years of a deal, those numbers are often times extremely misleading.

So, assuming that Davis really does want 23 million up front. If he is able to play in Dallas for 5 years, wouldn't he be worth it? I mean, couldn't you structure the contract so that he got his guaranteed money, but he could actually perform for you on the field and earn it.

Now, I understand that the owner would have to be confident that Davis would be able to produce at that level for the next 4-5 years or so, but in theory, that might not be so awful, right?

The nfl really doesn't "guarantee" contracts and I don't think anyone wants to start. The real guaranteed money is the bonus plus the first year base and 23 million in that first year is just way to much compared to what has been signed by other players.

How in the world did he get out of Washington without a contract???

I was convinced "little Napoleon" was going to be handing him gold bars to stick in his pockets.

This sounds very promising that he is flying back to Texas. I would be shocked if he is not a Cowboy by tommorow or Monday.

Looks like Columbo is out of here, I really wanted Columbo AND Davis.

What I am asking if it would be possible to go ahead and give Davis somewhere around 20 million as a bonus and sign him for minimum base salaries. He could conceivably play for you for the next 5 years and earn every single cent, if you were willing to take a chance on him being productive for that long.

For whatever it's worth, I think davis is asking for a ridiculously high amount of money, and I can't see Dallas giving him all of that guaranteed. I think Jerry will be persuasive enough to let Davis see that if he comes here and performs, he can make every dollar of the money he's wanting though.
