I know this has been said before, but we have two defensive anchors in Ware and Ratliff who are absolutely thriving in their current roles in this style defense. I think I'd try as hard as possible not to go overhauling the thing into something else.

Yeah, Ware could probably succeed as a 4-3 defensive end. But I'd rather not take a player who amassed 20 sacks in his current role and tinker with what he's doing.

I had this discussion with a buddy of mine early.

Starters:

DE- Ratliff (IMO would be an awesome 4-3DE), Canty/Ellis (on passing downs)
DT- Spears, FA Pickup/Draft
OLB- Ware (Yes, I think he would be just fine, play DE in the nickle like he does now), Carp/FA/Draft/Burnett (We've got to make a decision on Carp)
MLB- James
CB- T-New, Scan, Jenkins
FS- Henry
SS- Hamlin

Roy gets cut.

DE Ellis
DE Ware
DT Ratliff
DT Spears

LOLB --- no idea
MLB Bradie James
ROLB --- no idea.

That is the rub.

Bradie is a 3-4 MLB and lacks foot speed(and lateral quickness) to go sideline to sideline in a 4-3. And we have no real OLB except Burnett who is 230 pounds and always hurt plus needs a contract.

We are staying 3-4 because of this.

I think we could make the front four 4 but not the linebacking corps.

So we put our All Pro WOLB who is fit perfectly for an outside LB spot in a 3-4 and we switch him into an olb in a 4-3 D where he wont be getting after the QB unless we blitz? I think Id rather see him at OLB in a 3-4 scheme but if we had to switch to a 4-3 Id much rather see him at a DE where like as a olb in the 3-4 he would be threat to get to the QB almost every pass

No way Bradie could handle the coverage responsibilities of a 4-3 MLB.

That's why he was terrible his first couple of years until Parcells switch us to the 3-4. After that the light came on for him.

Well, I agree with the general consensus that we're better suited to the 3-4 but, now that the coaching staff is falling apart and Gruden's just standing against the wall waiting to be asked to dance, it seems a reasonable enough question. It's not pretty:

DE: Ratliff and Ware and Ellis as backup. Try Spencer here
DTs: Spears and TBD or, perish the thought but JJ is JJ -- Tank
OLBs: Burnett and TBD or try Spencer here too
MLB: James
