Several thoughts as I watch this:

1. What a fun time this was with a team of great veterans and Roger the Dodger just starting out. It was a GREAT team.

2. How in the world did Duane Thomas flame out? Man what a great runner he was at this time.

3. What a different mindset there was in the NFL at the time. Dallas was only up 10-3 at half and some were talking like it might already be over.

4. That was a great defense we had.

5. BARELY ANY COMMERCIALS. WOW.

Or graphics cluttering the screen.

However, they'd go huge stretches without flashing the score or the game-clock.

You are exactly right bbgun. Some of that I miss, because I enjoy pertinent information, but its actually kind of nice, at times, to just get the game.

That defense was dominant. Add in Thomas Hill and Garrison in the running game, Staubach throwing to Ditka Hayes Rentzel and Alworth.

Great great team.

Great great team.

Rentzel was not a member of that team. Alworth took his place and his uni #.

Where are you watching it, rcaldw?

I thought the same thing watching our first SB against Pittsburgh, though. Amazingly few commercials.

And no one is even close to Summerall. Amazing that a clown like Joe Buck is a #1 play-by-play guy today.

I remember that day so well. Living in Florida all my friends in school were huge Dolphin fans and I was the only Cowboy fan.

I was so happy that we finally won the big one.

I remember all my family being together watching it and being so overjoyed! What a great day!

My dad and uncled hated Duane Thomas and Jim Brown! Ha! I had no idea why he wouldn't talk and why it was such a big deal when he did the interview withBrookshire. I agree with Lilly that Thomas should have been the next Jim Brown if only he had a brain.

I agree with you Lab about Summerall and Buck. I actually don't mind Buck that much, but compared to truly great play by play guys, the modern guys pale in comparison, in my opinion. Summerall was just a classic. I also used to love hearing Lindsey Nelson call games.

Summerall was the color guy for this one though, and Ray Scott did the play by play. He was good too.

I have the game on DVD. Someone gave it to me from their original video recording of it. So, I have the original 30 minute (can you believe that) Super Bowl preview show, brought to us by Black and Decker where they interrupt the pre game show 4 times to offer their "Super Bowl Specials".

Crap. Thought I made a mistake there.

Still a great team.

Alot less me first, prima donna athletes back then. Duane was kind of a pioneer for that behavior.

Its amazing to watch the guys after scores. They almost sprint back to the sidelines. You can tell they are excited and they may slap a few hands on the way back, but that is about it. I mean they just run straight off the field.

I've been a Cowboys fan ever since that game. SB Vl was the first Cowboys game I ever watched. It was the first televised football game I ever watched period. I only watched the game because my dad told me and my brother that the only way he would take us to the carnival that came to town every SB weekend was if the Cowboys win. My dad was DEVASTATED the year before when the Colts beat the Cowboys in the final seconds in SB V but like a trooper he still took me and my brother to the carnival. He was so miserable he didn't enjoy himself and told us he wasn't leaving the house if the Cowboys lose this one. My dad had been following the team since 1960 so he suffered through alot of disappointing loses. That game meant alot to him and you could see the tension on his face prior to kick off. Me and my brother sat and cheered for the Cowboys only because we wanted to go to that carnival. We lived in a small dead town so we looked forward to it every SB weekend. Pulling for the Cowboys the way I did made me a fan and I started following them the very next season. Never thought that would happen. The 72 season was my first full season as a Cowboys fan. I started watching all the games on Sunday and Monday night. It's been the same ritual ever since and it all started on Jan 16 1972.

That's when I got hooked too at 8 yrs. old...actually started watching earlier in that season and winning the SB just made me a Cowboy for life. I watched every game I could after that and every since.
When Dallas had Roger Staubach we never were out of a game, even down 2 or 3 scores with 5 min. left, there was hope. I'll always remember Staubach to Pearson to beat the vikes and win the NFC in '74.

Great story.

The love for this team is special when you can trace it all the way back to your childhood. You literally can re-trace the years of your life by remembering what happened in a particular season and where you were at that time.
