Watkins Saturday practice notes

Yeah I remember a couple of guys saying he wasn’t as long as other guys that were touted as top 10 picks, and like you said, the two guys they used as examples were D James and K Hamilton. Both of those guys are jumbo sized safeties (specifically height).

The analysts said that Downs wasn’t big like those guys, but his smarts and leadership make him a top 10 type of safety.

But James and Hamilton aren’t average sized safeties… they’re very tall, long safeties.

Downs, who is 6-0 205 is around the average size for a safety. Since he is just 6-0, he is built thicker than many safeties.

I remember Bryan Broaddus saying during minicamp that Caleb is more thick and muscular in person than he expected him to be.
Derwin James is not huge compared to Downs.

I don’t understand this strange argument going on in this thread about Downs’ stature.

First things first, Downs is average height for a safety. In fact, league average size for a safety is 6’0, 203 lbs.

Second, since when do safeties have to be huge in order to be good players? Tyrann Mathieu is one of the best safeties of the 2010s and he is 5’9. Ed Reed is 5’11. Earl Thomas is 5’10. Bob Sanders was awesome when not injured and he is 5’8.

What makes Downs a great player is not enormous size or insane athleticism. It is the fact that he is often the smartest player on the field. He reads and reacts instantly and often recognizes the play in front of him before the ball is even snapped. His instincts and football intelligence are off the charts. His fundamentals are A+ - he never misses a tackle.

He didn’t punch BSF, he got mostly ball and a little BSF but it wasn’t a direct punch IMO.
Well, it probably looked to Spann-Ford like he was throwing a punch. Of course, he may not have cared for it simply because he dropped the pass, so it was unnecessary.
