Rusher. I’ve been watching all 22 of Mike Nolan’s defenses and one thing they all have in common whether playing a 4-3 or 3-4 or 5-2 is he likes an edge player to be in a two point stance. This is a position I haven’t looked at in years because we run just a basic 4-3. It’s going to be exciting to see who they get for this position.

In his 4-3 he plays a DE-DT-NT——Edge (stand up)
LB. LB. LB

so right now we have :
Lawrence-?-woods——?
? Smith LVE

his DT,s are pretty lengthy on tape but his NT,s are wide and stout. His pass rushing Edge players are typically very long( Gregory or TJ watt would’ve been perfect for his scheme). This player would fit Mike Nolan’s scheme very well if he runs it anything like he has in the past.

Gregory

2-point vs. 3-point is just personal preference. The only time an edge is in a 2-point is a base 3-4, and I don't think we're going to run that (nickel 65% of the time anyways). DLaw has stood up before when rushing the passer.

...ignore the sarcasm lol.

And just, conceptually, the defense wouldn't be any different if Quinn was regularly standing up. It would still function the exact same way, but Quinn is probably more explosive out of the 3 point. If he wanted to win with hands and technique, he might be more comfortable in a 2-point.

If he can bend, Jaylon would be the obvious choice. I think Lawrence is too heavy. It doesnt make sense to me to have a stand up guy everyone knows has zero chance of dropping. The chance he might drop back is the entire point. Then again, Lawrence's athleticism has surprised me at times.

Also, I love Julian Okwara. Dude absolutely flies around the field and has great bend. I'd love to get him and have another golden domer.

Gregory has/can do it.

Quinn, if re-signed, has/can do it.

Armstrong can do it as well.

Before hiring Nolan, Edge Rusher was quietly one of our biggest off-season needs.

Steelers free agent Bud Dupree would be ideal, but as we all know, adding premium free agents will be tricky this year.

Terrell Lewis from Alabama is one of my favorite Edge prospects this year. Injuries are a question mark with him.

I know it's early and a lot can change. But as of right now I see him at #34 in the draft. Also projected to go in that area. Not going to pick him at #17 and probably won't fall to us in the 2nd round. That only leaves trading up.

If we stick to a 4-3 I doubt Nolan cares how our edge rushers line up as long as they do their job.

Right, get Armstrong to drop his weight back into the 250s and don't forget the Jelks kid... think he was 6'6 255 ish!

Trevis Gipson
EDGE, Tulsa
A late Senior Bowl addition, Tulsa defensive end Trevis Gipson fits exactly what this front office looks for at the defensive end position. He is a long, aggressive, three-down defender who is productive against the run, but also possesses a ton of athletic traits worth developing as a pass rusher. With Robert Quinn set to hit to the open market, the Cowboys are likely going to draft an edge defender to bolster the depth chart.

Jalen Jelks

I’m glad I’m not the only one who thinks we might have something in Jelks. I liked the pick last year as a raw pass rusher. Thought he was a steal in the 7th. I’m really interested in what he can show in in camps.

Jaylon can do it. That’s his best attribute as no QB in football can run away from him.
