Before folks start posting there ‘glass half empty’ opinions.. please think Kris Richard. Our new secondary coach has proven in Seattle that he knows how to get the best out of his players. Some my say it’s easy bc he had house hold names like that of Chancellor, Thomas, and Sherman roaming in the outfield. But those guys didn’t do it all on their own.. Richards also coached up lesser known guys like: Jeremy Lane, DeShawn Shead, Tye Smith, Walter Thurman, and Jeron Johnson to name a few. Not to mention guys that failed once they left Seattle like Maxwell and Browner. All these guys catapulted the Seattle Defense on thier way to a SB win and even branded their name, The Legion of Boom. I think Richards is going to take this young secondary to a level not see before in Dallas. He’s coached the best and knows what works in the NFL.

A popular choice early in the draft this year is that Dallas should pick a ‘real’ game changing safety early this year. I understand the sentiments, but recognize there are other holes that could use a top draft pick like DT, OG, LB, WR.. and did I say Linebacker?

I read that this class is deep in DT, WR, RB, and CB.. So using a top pick on a position that could be had later in the draft seems senseless UNLESS that player is above and beyond better than his peers. That said.. Do we pick a Safety in the first round or do we improve either side of the Line. The old saying goes “The battle is won in the trenches”- not real sure who coined the phrase though.

This leads me to the Safety position: Most were like me and was hopeful that a player like Earl Thomas would come to Dallas, but that realistically not going to happen due to the contract he will command. Unfortunately this draft is deep with Safeties..there are only a two, maybe three top safeties in this draft and you can poke holes in all of them. The consensus via draft experts is it’s hard to find a true Safety in college these days based on the schemes that are run. So I started looking at our current roster and realized we may already have a Earl Thomas on the roster. Chidobe Awuzie. I was rumored last year when he was drafted that he may be converted to Safety, but out of necessity, he remained at corner and showed promise. He proved to be a fearless tackler, physical, and could cover. Sounds a lot like Thomas when he was a CB coming out of Texas before he was converted to Safety. And thier measureables are very similar:

Earl Thomas
5’10” 202lbs
31” arms
4.4 40yd
21 bench
113” broad

Chidobe Awuzie
6’0 202lbs
30.6” arms
4.4 40yd
16 bench
132” broad

A lot of people don’t realize Awuzie scored a 34 on the wonderlic test also, so he is a bright young man that is more than capable of transitioning to Safety. I’m hoping Kris Richards will move Bryon back to Corner and work his magic, as he prefers taller CBs anyway. Dallas did well last year drafting CBs.. and since this draft seems to be deep with CBs, go get another one mid rounds.

The secondary could look like this:
Safety- Awuzie, Woods, Frazier, & Heath

CBs- Lewis, Brown, Jones, (Draft pick), Duke Thomas, Benwikere, Or Marquez White.. etc

Honestly I want the crappy coaching staff the cowboys have, to completely STOP changing players positions. And stop with the “position flexibility” crap too.

We have too many mediocre players who play multiple positions, rather than players who excel at one.

Leave Chido where he is.

Stop with the guys playing both DT and DE, etc.

If they need a safety...... here is a novel and creative idea......Draft or sign a freaking safety.

Jerry and our coaches are always trying to outsmart everybody by getting cute with players.

Just go after a safety that knows how to play the position at a high level already and be done with it.

before we snap arms celebrating, lets see what we have in facts first. Yes im excited for Richards to succeed here, but there is plenty of swamp here in Dallas. So lets see how things play out. A lot of fans thought we were making noise last season and they didnt understand what the first loss of the season meant. From the first game to the second game you can hear the crowing up here in Jersey and after Denver SILENCE.

I like Richards, I like our young secondary, and I like my glass half full. But it's going to take the whole bottle for you to convince me that we have our own Earl Thomas six-time pro bowler.
" Barkeep, another double please";)

You must be young.

I’ve been a fan since the late 80’s (yea that’s right, I became a fan when they sucked). I wasn’t around for the Doomday Defense.. and the 90’s Defense was phenomenal, but I don’t remember the secondary striking fear in thier opponents(or having a nickname) like Seattle once did. Maybe that comment was an over statement.. I’m just tired of the mediocracy that we’ve endured from Secondary for what seems like a lifetime. I will say that I think the strength of Seattle’s Defense has been thier Safeties, which we haven’t had since Darren Woodson.

I was around when Staubach was in his hay day..followed by Danny White(underrated)...and we DID have a great group of db's during both era's. If we can channel the knowledge that Kris Richard can bring to the team..I can tell you..its infectious to the entire club. We may be dominant on defense guys.

I think the marriage if you will, between Marinelli's style and Kris Richards on the back end will be special and compliment one another. Not to mention Ben Bloom as the Linebacker Coach. This guy has tons of coaching potential. We have a great staff.

Heading down that dark tunnel called Position Flex again. Why can’t Dallas just play safeties at safety?
