We are beyond Decimated (injuries matter)

The word "decimated" comes from the Latin root word for "deci", which means 10. The Roman legions would, after defeating an opponent, sometimes kill one out of every 10 surviving men as punishment and to break the will of the group.

We are WAY beyond decimated (more like one out of 4). Let's take a look at the game yesterday in context.

Let's imagine we go to any team in the NFL and for their upcoming game this weekend, we make the following moves:

On Offense
  • Remove starting QB
  • Remove #1 Receiver (who is top 5 in the league)
  • Remove starting Left Guard
  • Take starting HoF #1 Tight End and hobble him with knee & ankle injuries
On Defense
  • Remove top 2 pass rushers on the defensive line
  • Remove top 2 backups on the defensive line, preventing any type of wave strategy
  • Remove # 1 Cornerback
  • Remove starting MLB
Now, I'm as disappointed as anyone that we didn't have our "next men up" step up a bit more and that we blew the early lead.

But in context, go ahead and play this exercise with any team in the NFL. Then put them up against a pretty strong Falcons team which seems to handle adversity pretty well.

How many teams win that game yesterday, given that same set of circumstances?

Injuries mean something. Especially when you're trying to field an over-decimated legion against a superior opponent.

Thank you.
All you have to do is look at Seattle and see what the loss on ONE player did to there defense.

With Mincey out, we had to play the same 4 guys most of the game, both Crawfords-Lawrence & Hayden.. Coleman & Russell spelled them at times, but they were out there way too much & got carved up in the run game.. It would be nice if Lawerence could return this weekend. The pass rush was non existant

I don't think we are missing Scandrick that much. The corners have been pretty good this year. Patmon and Claiborne have been very nice surprises. I think the Falcons targeted Wilber a little, but the bigger issue was the D-Line. I'd like to see the film. It seemed to me that the Falcons were stretching the run game more horizontally and the D-Line couldn't keep up and then that opened the pass up more. So that tends to lead me to believe that the DE's were a bigger issue. If so, Lawrence is exactly the player I feared he would be when we greatly overpaid for him. He is a nothing in the pass game.

Injuries to as many key players is going to hurt any team, if backups were better they would not be called backups. Dallas has to be able to fight through these injuries and will not be easy but sooner the starters can get back the better chances we have. After this up coming game we get Hardy and McClain that should be a big help to this defense.

Lawerence played yesterday. Did he get hurt or what are you meaning?

Yeah Yeah ....all that said....

Game was very winnable...

During one of the THREE 14 pt leads we had we could have slowed the game down, ball control, top, etc

AND WE BLEW IT

I agree Kam is a great player but they played Jimmy Clausen and a team that looks like they are just going through the motions. Nobody but Matt Forte gives a hoot on that Bears team. I would HATE to be a Bears fan right now.

The problem is Weeden. Every team we face will load the box with 8 or 9 players and force weeden to beat them. I don't think he can do it.

This is why I think Cassel has to play as soon as he's ready, its clear the coaches dont trust Weeden in any kind of fashion. One thing that disappoints me is the coaches didn't have Weeden take shots down field. He has a monster arm just air it out to put some fear in defenses.

I would say Top 3 pass rushers (Hardy, Gregory, Mincey).

I keep reading we lost our best CB, who, Scandrick? Can we stop this nonsense, Mo is better than Scandrick.

3 games is all we need...and that seems like a whole lot to ask for considering our injuries.

Weeden doesn't even try to throw to the receivers. Everything was a dump to the RB or TE, until Atlanta stopped it. His stats don't tell the real story.

And there is no way to speculate on if was him checking down or part of what the gameplan was.

He played but was invisible. If you look at the stats sheet, The only D lineman who played was Hayden. The rest were invisible as far as tackles.

Yup...being up big in the 1st half doesn't really matter when you're having to play a bunch of backups due to injuries. A game is two halves, adjustments can be made. The Falcons are a good team, they were able to make enough adjustments to expose our shortcomings. Meanwhile, the Cowboys couldn't really make as many adjustments as they wanted without their full set of tools.
