We are about to hire a DC that preaches fundamentals, adjusts his scheme to his players and because of that his defense is simple to understand and implement.
Why is this important?
Had we stayed with Ryan and the 3-4 we would have had to spend picks and FA money to beef up the DL and probably suffer through more chaos at the wrong time because of Ryan's lack of attention to detail.
With Kiffen we will not have to add a lot parts to improve the defense. By making things simple, scheming to strengths and being fundamentally sound we can use our resources elsewhere.
He will have ample time to evaluate players and make a plan for what to do in FA, keeping Spencer or letting him go and the draft. Depending on what he thinks about Spencer and Matt Johnson we may not need to do anything on defense beyond a plug-in FA or middle round LB. Worst case we are probably looking at either using a first on a DE or a second on a safety.
This allows us to focus on OL in the draft.
