We are not drafting an OT

Why do I keep seeing people mention Jonathan Martin as a real option for us? There is just about 0 percent chance that we draft an OT. We already have a bunch of money tied up in Free and Smith. Plus there is a small chance of Free being an upgrade at OG. He already struggles against the bull rush from DE's, so hows he going to handle 300+ lb DT's? Put Fee at RT and he will be just fine, there are better ways to upgrade the interior line than moving our RT there and replacing him with an unproven rookie.

The reason people think we could draft an OT is because they feel that Free could be moved to G. I'm not sure if this would be a good move or not, but that is the premise behind the thought.

I would rather Free move to RT where he would be more effective and get a real guard.

If you've ever listened to Hudson Houck talk about the offensive line, you would understand that the goal would be to put the 5 best offensive lineman, regardless of position, and have them as starters.

When he was asked if Free could move to guard, he said he believed that he would be able to because of his size. The objective would be to take the best player that fills a need, and from what I have seen, Martin has been graded higher than DeCastro and it is up to the Cowboys to grade and choose who they want. I'm not saying they should take Martin over DeCastro if given the opportunity, but I'm just saying that there's a possibility that the Cowboys could take ANYONE at this point.

It is foolish to say that there is '0 percent' chance of someone taking a player.

yeah i highly highly doubt we draft a tackle in round 1. People need to put that to bed. Now if the usc LT fell to 14 than we will probably pull the trigger or get a good trade down deal. But that is highly unlikely (unless he gets injured during workouts).

At 14 i think we are looking at CB, OLB, DE (brockers, coples, still), guard (decastro...sp?) or trade back.

Martin, out of Stanford, might not be a LT. I have heard some different things about this player.

Ain't that the truth! :laugh2:

Yep, never draft the BPA, particularly if it is OT. Lord knows they arent valuable.:laugh2: Seriously, only reason they would not consider drafting Martin is he is either gone or somebody they like better is available. This guy protected Lucks blind side for years and is a primo run blocker too. Huge upgrade from Free at either tackle spot.

RT is not a weakness. So if BPA is a QB or RB you take that too at 14? Free is a long shot at OG and Martin is not a shoe in to be better than Free at RT either. This would be a stupid risk to take that could easily set the team back.

:laugh2: Doug Free is a JAG at best, and was not even that last year.

He was a bit over matched at LT but he is a better than average RT.

How is upgrading the talent on the O Line a stupid risk that will set the team back? Guess you must have missed how they played last year. Both DeCastro and Martin are huge upgrades over Free and you will spend the same amount of money on the pick. Martin also gives you the flexibility to leave Smith at RT. I see no down side either Martin or DeCastro, only difference is where Free ends up, either tackle or guard, and Hudson Houck felt he could play guard no problem.

I would add something to this post , but think you presented enough facts to close this thread . Well done sir .;)

Yes, this plan makes more sense. It is a waste of resources because Free will be a very good RT. Everyone is overreacting to a bit of a down year. We left Free on an island and he did reasonably well most of the time.

And if either OTs Free or Smith would get hurt next year, who would you rather have coming in Martin or Parnell?

And some competition just might push Free to play like he should.

What exactly is Houck supposed to say in a public interview about Free? No he stinks, couldn't play there? Get the man behind closed doors and ask for his honest opinion then ill believe. Until then I'm just not buying that Free has the upper body strength to OG. He would probably end up on his back a few times a game.
