...and so of course the offense is now costing us games.
Easy to forget in the massive heartbreak of that loss to the Skins on Sunday that the defense only gave up 13 points in a tough road battle.
That play where Dak got stripped for an easy walk-in Skins TD late in the game reminded me of that infamous game in that same stadium where Troy Aikman fumbled late and the Skins recovered in the end zone for the winning TD. That was the game where Jimmy Johnson lost it on the team plane on the flight back to Dallas and was so nasty to the flight crew that he later apologized for his behavior.
I can say this about the offense: even after that huge blow of turning the ball over for an easy Commander score to go behind by 10 points, they didn't quit. They fought back to get a TD and then got in position for a FG that would have sent the game to OT.
Yet again I am seeing playcalling where we go empty backfield on short yardage situations. Perhaps the biggest thing holding the offense back is that the coaches running the offense during the games keep outsmarting themselves. Great coaches know their players strengths and put them in position to excell. I'm not sure the coaches on this present staff think this way; they seem to fall in love with ideas and then demand the personnel 'execute'.
Despite all that's gone wrong thus far this season, it's a fact we're only 1 game back of the Commanders. Somebody from this division is going to the playoffs. The eternal optimist in me is hoping enough of the team's problems get fixed so it can be us.
I'm of course aware even making the playoffs, this team wouldn't go very far. It is what is. I suffered through the last few bad Landry years, the 1-15 debacle, I've seen some very bad and disappointing seasons along the way. The hope for this one still hasn't died yet.
