We Have 6 Draft Picks in Next Week's Draft

I expect us to end up drafting 8 rookies. This is a gut feeling. It is not based on any inside tips or anything. I have a feeling we will trade down at least once and that at least one veteran player could be dealt for a Draft pick.

When evaluating what a team will do in a given Draft you have to look at three things closely.

1. What position needs an immediate starter?

2. What position has incumbents who may only have a year left?

3. Where are we really thin?

The answer to the first question is possibly the most controversial topic on this forum at this time of year. Is it Free Safety or is it Offensive Tackle? Is it Wide Receiver given the inadequacies to fill that role exemplified by Roy Williams so far? The easy answer is Free Safety.

I have earlier this year posted a belief that the Safety position is changing, morphing, going through a metamorphoses, or just plain re-focusing. I stand by that belief. However, I also believe there is strong evidence to suggest it will be a short change that moves back towards stronger run coverage. That is why Dallas is looking so hard at Taylor Mays. They are trying to determine if he is a better SS than FS and if they can play him closer to the LOS where they can blitz him or use him more in run support.

Remember, Mosley earlier this year said we only gave 3 Safeties a 1st round classification. Berry and Thomas will not reach us at 27. Therefore they are going to seriously consider Mays. Whether that means they will roll the dice or not, I don't know. If a Defensive minded coach like Wade Phillips cannot pull the talent out of a player with Mays abilities, no one can.

One thing to remember as well, Stephen Jones said a key to this position is what we get from Mike Hamlin. Keep that in the back of your mind if we draft a Safety late, as opposed to early. It will mean they think of him as the starter. More likely at SS with Sensy moving to FS. Just food for thought.

Answering the 2nd question is the easiest one of the 3. Putting it mildly obvious we need to fortify the Offensive line for the future, find a permanent replacement for T-New and for Keith Brooking. T-New is the least likely to be replaced immediately of the last 2 names. Yes, he is 32, but he is a young 32 and we do have Scandrick on the roster. Some can argue that we have Jason Williams and Bobby Carpenter behind Brooking, but neither is going to show his leadership or fire.

That is why if we were going to trade up at all, I believe it would be for Rolando McClain, not Dez Bryant, and not Earl Thomas.

It is preferable that we replace our starting O-lineman one at a time. Free for Flo this year. Kosier next year. Columbo in 2 years. Gurode in 3. BIGG in 4. Can we do that? Probably not. That is why Iupati and Pouncey are so perfect right now and why they top our needs list over any other spot. That is why I have always believed interior OL is our focus moreso than OT. It is also why I think we want to groom the other replacements the same way we did with Free. Perhaps Brewster is already in place to do this. We can certainly hope so.

The last question is what the late rounds are for. Find guys to groom into eventual starters. Guys with high character who will adopt the team concept. Guys who love the game with a passion equal to a Jay Ratliff, a Choice, a Romo. Yeah, he was a UDFA gem. So was Austin. Ogletree might be. Will we find some more? If we do, all it does is help the immediate future and the long term future both.

If we get a Kick Return guy who also is a Punt Return guy I think that alone will fire me up. I want better starting field position because I believe we are this close to being a top 5 Offense and Defense at the same time. Last year we nearly added top 5 Special Teams to that. Having all three could mean a special season.

In our house no less.

You may hate the new Draft format, but come Thursday, you're going to be as excited for Christmas in April as you ever were. 3 questions need to be answered. I believe the truth is out there.

Nicely done.

Well thought out points that make a lot of sense.

I love posts like this one.

good stuff hos. what do you think of those who say we will target DL in round 1. that does go to one of your questions as Spears, Hatch and Bowen are all on 1 year deals.

Remember, Mosley earlier this year said we only gave 3 Safeties a 1st round classification. Berry and Thomas will not reach us at 27. Therefore they are going to seriously consider Mays. I agree that the Cowboys are looking hard at Mays. That said, imo, Mays definitely isn't the "safe pick" in Round 1 - whether it's to play SS, FS, or LB, imo.

I'd consider Mays a boom or bust pick for the Cowboys at this stage.

In Round 1, I would speculate the Cowboys would end up going with a "safer pick" or less risky pick like Alualu (sp?), McCourty, K Jackson, N Allen, etc.

I think if they roll the dice on Mays, it would be in Round 2.

Of course, this could all be wishful thinking on my part!

We love Tyson Alualu. I know that for a fact. People may say it is a reach whomever we grab at 27 if the OL and FS guys are gone along with a couple of players like Dez and Mays. Don't be shocked if Alualu is the name at 27. Would that mean Spears is gone? Not necessarily, but it would mean he's on a 1 year bargain price.

We don't need to carry 2 Kickers hopefully. Could that mean an extra DL? One who can play all 3 spots?

How is that not value? Alualu would be a great pick at 27.

One thing about Mays in his favor big, he is a fiery leader that could replace Brooking as the emotional spark plug of the Defense.

Initially I thought you said that we were looking at Mays, but moreso in Round 2 (than in Round 1), and possibly as an ILB. I might have misinterpreted what you said a few weeks ago.

Reading between the lines I thought you meant that while we were considering Mays, it would not likely be in Round 1.

Do you still feel that way, or do you think as of today there is a greater chance we pick Mays in Round 1 (versus a couple weeks ago)?

This is one of the best posts that I've read on this site. It makes a lot of sense and I believe this is how it will play out this week.

I wouldn't be upset with Alualu at 27. I think he'll be a good player in Wade's scheme.

However, if we stay at 27, I feel like it is more likely that we go with the best guard prospect or with the best corner prospect (likely McCourty).

I think there is an outside chance that we like Nate Allen enough to take him at 27, but probably would trade down some if that's who we wanted.

This is one idea I'm having a hard time buying into even more so then Dez or Mays and I'm really on the fence about them.

I wouldnt be upset with anybody at 27 who improved the team short or long term. I just dont think Mays is that guy, particularly in the best draft in a long time.

Terence Newman is a young 32.

Indeed. Nice job of pointing that out.

A improvement in the return games would really help, indeed.

They need to block better on kickoffs, too.

Lets say the value for S is not there early on, and they don't think Hamlins the answer. Do you think they'll go after Atogwe or Sharper in free agency?

So Chris Cook in the 2nd is a possibility if the coveted Allen and Burnett are gone when we pick?

Chad Jones maybe an option as he also is a PR.

If we get McClain, you might need to get a restraining order against me Hos, cause I will need a man hug.

One of the reasons why the Roy Williams comparisons are misguided in my opinion. Mays doesn't appear to be a sulker with a lack of personal accountability but someone who can acknowledge his shortcomings and work hard to overcome them.

Unlike many, I have no problem taking Taylor Mays at 27. Mays may need to brush up on his man to man coverage, but he has exceptional speed (4.3), size (6'3 230) and intangibles (vocal leadership) to play either FS or ILB, 2 positions of need on this Cowboys' team.

In addition, Mays' coverage liabilities are in his mid-range game, he has less problems playing as a centerfielder or close to the LOS (which are strengths of his game). Mays should be fine pushing for a FS or nickel backer spot for the Cowboys.
