We have clearly improved

And yet with that horrible D and without Romo, we went 5-3 and it shoulda been 6-2.

First, stop with the should have been 6-2. We were 5-3, end of story. And one of those wins was against Philly's 3rd stringers in a game nobody cared about.

2nd, so what? You're still not going to the playoffs with a 31st ranked defense. And even if you do by some miracle you're going to get blown out early.

Yeah yeah magic of Red Jeebus blah blah blah. We still have a very, very mediocre DL, a very old MLB pair, and the worst secondary since Campo was on the sidelines as HC.

If that doesn't get fixed this team is probably not going anywhere this year. The 4th place schedule will help the regular season record a bit, but this is not a team ready to make noise in the playoffs at all even if they should somehow make it. You just can't do it with a defense this bad.

I don't see where that is an unreasonable or panicky point of view.

they will win some and lose some--why not wait until we get the entire team on the field and play a bit before we panic and give up or hoist the Lombardi

I didn't start the thread pointing out we were improved and predicting better than 6-10. I merely responded that the the major areas of concern last season, particularly on the defensive side of the ball, have not been addressed to this point at all. And ultimately it wasn't even the loss of Romo that did us in last year, it was the defense.

I reserve the right to change my mind if we actually sign a safety, CB or DE/NT worth a darn.

7-9 would be a small miracle. With the pass pressure on Romo and no running game, actually thinking we could be in the Luck sweepstakes 4-12?
Someone needs to save this one.

Thank you.

I also love how the "we went 5-3, and should have been 6-2" keeps getting parroted.

Here's news, we were 1-4 or 1-5 WITH Romo last year.

I just don't like this roster right now going into the season.

I'd say 8 wins.

Now, I certainly think they have the capability for an 11 win season, but I guess I'll have to see how some of the players look in pre season.

I think this team improved, but looking at the schedule we might be a 7-9 worst case, 9-7 best case. I say battling it out with the Gmen for second place.

I see Philly, St Louis, Tampa Bay/Atlanta, Green Bay division winners. 1 wild card team from the South with second place teams from the east/north battling it out for the last spot.

I'd be very surprised to see this team make the playoffs this year.

Yeah.. But if they play like can and I think they will because of the new coaches we should have no problem beating those two.

I can't believe all these 7-9 and 6-10 projections. Let's not forget, this team was a stupid Roy play away from 6-2 under Garrett LAST YEAR.

And, we have improved tremendously since then.

Romo > Kitna, huge improvement

Granted Romo is light years above Kitna. However, if memory serves we were not a great team last year before the collar bone incident. Nothing stays the same, so obviously we can all EXPECT improvement, but that also doesn't stay the same and trying to do a this equals that is supposition at best.

Choice/Murray > Barber, again big

We do not know what Murray will bring. Conjecture at best. However, I agree with you because I think Murray will be a weapon. But I cannot see into the future or I would have known my ex-wife channeled her personality from a bitter Rosie O'Donnell.

Smith/Holland > Colombo/Bigg, should be big as well

Again you assume Smith will catch on in time to make a difference and that Holland stays healthy for the first time.

TE/FB -- Chapas and Phillips > Gronk and Whoever

I agree here.

Bailey > Buehler

You are proffering value when you cannot make a case other than you assume.

Lee with another year and Carter > Brooking (esp on the nickle)

I might agree, still a little early for that.

The safeties we sign (probably Elam and another) > Ball by far

Ball may be the single most reason I think Jerry has no clue.

CB is about the same, but Ball as 4th CB > McCann

Which suggests from last year we are in trouble. But if we are playing the assume game I would suggest Newman is done. So that makes it worse.

Not to mention, we have Rob Ryan > Wade -- this is huge! Our D will not be predictable.

Maybe. But that also expects the players we have to perform and execute as he desires. Coaching is important, but if your players don't execute you could get Pee Wee Herman to coach and get the same results.

Spears and Lissemore were injured at the time ... Now we have them and Coleman. We lost Bowen, but this is probably a push overall for Dline.

So we know they will not get injured again. Especially since we have no real time for strength workouts and cannot do two-a-days.

WR? We lost Roy, but we lost Dez during that time and he is more seasoned now. Maybe a slight downgrade...

This probably got you toasted somewhere in this thread. I have not read it all. The problem is do we have a third receiver? Some champion Otree but he is an unknown. Injury will again decimate this squad if she comes to visit.

Only spots we are potentially worse are Dline and WR, and both of these are minimally worse. We lost 1 1/2 sacks from Bowen and Roy's 20 catches and 20 drops. Whoopie!

So, we were 5-3, almost 6-2, under Garrett, we have all these improvements, plus an easier schedule. Seems to me like big improvement, not another 6-10 season.

Our defense right this second is one year older and while you can make a case that it is improved, you also have to make the same case that it is not.

I have faith in the offense if...

We get good line play and the WR's stay healthy. Adding Phillips to the mix is a bonus you did not mention.

Defensively, Ryan better have graduated from Hogwarts.

This team could easily beat Miami and ST. Louis.

Only elite teams can say they can "easily beat" another team. And this team is far from elite. I lean towards the game vs Miami as a win because of the teams record on Thanksgiving. Stl is not a gimmie game. The Rams are a young and improving team.

This team's depth is woefully bad. Yes, the offseason isn't over, but the remaining talent isn't awe inspiring.

Couple that with the fact you're starting rookie OT who is likely to go through growing pains, with no proven backup to take over if need be. Add that to the fact your 2nd round pick is a huge question mark in terms of contributing this season. Your 3rd round pick redundantly addresses a position that's probably the deepest on the team (running back).

Counting on Montrae Holland as a fulltime starter is a bit of question mark. What's worse is that we have only a rookie at this time backing him up.

And safety........oh safety.

i agree with the post i really think we will be much improved oline will definetly be better. with the addition of a defensive coach that will get after the players i don't think we will see all the mental errors and players out of place.also i believe garrett will hold the players accountable. i think we will win either 9 or 10 games this year.....

I'm expecting improvement but maybe not as much as we would all like to see. I think Rob Ryan's defense will struggle a bit at first but improve as the year progresses. He'll probably need another offseason to fill holes and fully implement the schemes and nuances of his defense.

I love what's been done for the OL but it needs more. Tyron is obviously gonna start the right side as a rookie. Who knows how that will turn out? Arkin, Nagy, Holland and free agents...all question marks as well.

Give 'em a year to see how all this works out, another offseason to fill the holes and we'll be ready to roll.

I'm not so disappointed the FO didn't break the bank to sign all these big names. It was a feeding frenzy and I'm kind of glad they didn't get drunk in the excitement. We can fill the few holes we have left next offseason and be better off in the long run. Considering the lockout wasted this offseason, I'm willing to allow Garrett and Ryan a little leeway this year.
