Smart move on their part. Gotta keep a guy like that fresh for the playoffs.

Mea Culpa.

I was very excited when the Cowboys drafted Randy Gregory in the 2nd round with the 60th pick. Along with Byron Jones in the 1st round, and La’el Collins in free agency, I felt like the Cowboys landed three 1st round talents, and was bullish on how they would help the Cowboys.

But the coaching staff of Garrett screwed up on all of them.

1. The Cowboys should have moved on sooner from 2012 bust Morris Claiborne. Instead, they played Jones at Safety, wasting his prime years. They should have moved Claiborne to safety, and let Jones play corner.

2. La’el Collins was given Ron Leary’s job at Left Guard. As a short armed tackle at LSU, Collins had greater career potential at Guard. Instead, Garrett moved him to Right Tackle when Doug Free retired. If the Cowboys had kept Collins at his more natural position of Left Guard, it would have been better for both Collins and the Cowboys.

3. Randy Gregory is just a disappointment. There is no getting around it. He never lived up to the hype. For a man with all the apparent physical tools to be successful, he just was never able to get his head on straight. He loved the weed too much. Jerry and Garrett gave him too many chances. I was among those who went right along with Jerry and Garrett, continuing to believe that eventually, Gregory would pay off for the Cowboys. And in a way he did, but only by leaving.

Dorance Armstrong bloomed in his absence, and when Lawrence got hurt in Micah’s rookie season, the Cowboys were forced to use Micah to rush the passer - because Gregory was gone. But you can hardly give credit to Gregory for that.

It is time to just admit I was totally and completely wrong about Gregory. The only thing good about him is riddance. Mea Culpa.

Moving Collins to tackle was probably fulfilling a commitment Hog Jowls made to him when signing him as a FA.

We can downplay this but Gregory was a good pick up for hardly nothing for the 49ers. By playoff time he could either be a beast in that defense or somewhere in CA smoking legal POT lol.

We could really have used the false start and unnecessary roughness penalty he gives away every big game.
