We Must Start Seeing Some of These Slot CB’s as FS’s

We do a pretty good job in the draftzone of not only being pragmatic about picks and needs but also understanding our schematics in regards to the prospect. So many on this board already acknowledge that Quinn likes to take slot CB’s who exhibit ball skills and transition them to FS.

I’m not sure about his long-term track record doing this, but Ricardo Allen and Damontae Kazee were both nickels that were transitioned to FS once they got to the league. Both were solid to good starters and Kazee especially showed great turnover production in the role.

Additionally, when Jourdan Lewis resigned he said in his conversation with Dan Quinn he was told he would be allowed to fly around and make plays. Using Lewis in a quasi-safety nickel role figures to play him to his strengths.

When considering FS options this year, make sure to count guys like Elijah Molden and Javon Holland as FS’s because that’s what they’ll play if drafted.

I wonder about Shaun Wade as another potential candidate for a transition to safety.

What about Samuel too? He seems a lot like Molden to me.

Zaven Collins. Because a 260 lb free safety would be so much fun. :D

Samuel probably has the ability to do it but he’s a very good corner that can even play outside. He seems like a guy who could grow into an impactful corner, and I think he’ll end up staying there.

Guys like Molden have a lot of reps on film playing multiple nickel spots. I think Samuel Jr was so good at what he did that Florida St. didn’t play any games and kept him as a CB for the most part.

It's something to remember, or at least keep in the back of your mind when we're mocking DB's. I think Molden could make that jump. Holland to me, is a FS that can play CB.

He played some FS at OSU. Definitely possible but Wade is a bit of an enigma. I can see being a Byron Jones caliber FS. His diagnostic skills aren't great. However playing Slot and FS is where he had the most success in college

However where he is expected to go in the draft now, he could be very good value as a versatile sub package guy

I have absolutely no evidence from a writer or an insider, but I have a feeling that Quinn sees Lewis as his FS, and Kazee was brought in to be a tutor/insurance.

And I have that same hunch. He literally fits to a T what Quinn looks for in slot to FS transitions. Great ball skills will marginal athleticism and good tackling ability. I think he’ll start up in sub-packages as a S/CB hybrid and then get his chance to see if he can man FS full time.

Would be a helluva move if it worked. If anyone can do it it’s Quinn.

Yep, with all of the holes our defense has, that contract seems like way too much for a guy to compete to be the nickel CB.
