We need to draft a kicker

I know we just signed Kris Brown but I want as much highly talented competition as possible for this crucial roster spot. Buehler is simply inconsistent and I've lost my patience with him.

Who are the hot kickers entering the draft? A 6th or 7th round pick on one sounds about right to me.

I disagree big time: Dave Rayner of the Lions has been NAILS down the stretch: hit a 55 yarder today. If the Lions let Jason Hansen go: don't laugh, they very well might, Rayner could be the new starter in Dtown. Either way, one of those 2 guys should be brought in to compete with Buehler. We already have a young kicker, drafting another one is NOT the way to go IMO. Sign an vet to compete with Buehler. (I don't think Brown will be kept around: he doesn't have too much left in the tank)

Well they inked a 2 year contract with Brown so I take that to mean we'll see him in camp at least competing for the spot, which is fine with me. Using a 6th or 7th round pick isn't too costly and looks necessary to me. I don't know what the Lions plan on doing but it's risky to wait and see.

Alex Henery - Nebraska

I came in this thread specifically to type that very name. This guy would be a franchise kicker for us (if there is such a thing) for a very, very long time.

If he's available in the 4th round, I would scoop him up in a heartbeat...The trouble is, I think some other team may take him even earlier.

Just like Cowboy's fans had it with Cundiff?

Give the guy a chance...don't draft somebody, that's idiotic. I think he has a chance, consistency builds over time and success. And he's had some success, he just needs more time.

Can't have HOF'ers at every position, it's not fantasy football.

Forbath - UCLA as well.

No one is expecting a HOF at every position, at least not me. I would however like a kicker that kicks 97% from within 40 yards instead of a player we currently have that kicks around 77%.

Like it or not...many games are decided by kickers. It's a part of the game, and an important one at that.

Good luck with that.

I like our kicker...he'll be better next year; hopefully everyone will. He only missed one FG today, and that was a 52 yarder. He's had some untimely misses in his first year, but that's part of the learning curve. Check out the NFL stats on kickers for this year...he wasn't the worst. He struggled in the 30-39 yard range, but was one of the best in the longer ranges.

There were plenty of kickers who were in his neighborhood, and there were plenty of kickers who tried far fewer kicks than he did.

Competition yes...drafting another rookie kicker no.

Alex Henery, the guy I mentioned above, has broken the NCAA kicking record by kicking 97.7% from within the 40 yard line. Hence the stats...

Alex Henery stats from Huskers.com:

  • Alex Henery has made 89.2% of his career field goal attempts (66-of-74). The NCAA record is 87.8% by Florida’s Bobby Raymond. (min. 45 attempts)
  • Alex Henery has made 77.4% of his career field goals from 40 yards or longer (24-of-31). The NCAA career record is 72.1% by Georgia’s Billy Bennet.
  • Alex Henery has made 97.7% of his career field goals from inside 40 yards (42-of-43). The NCAA career record is 97.0% by Florida’s Bobby Raymond.
  • Alex Henery is tied for the NCAA record with six career games with at least four field goals.
  • Alex Henery has combined to make 256 of his 265 career kicks (PATs and field goals), a 96.6% accuracy rate. The NCAA FBS career record is 94.9% set by Missouri’s Jeff Wolfert.

I wonder if we can get Shayne Graham next year? I'd rather have a reliable vet and not deal with molding/developing a young kicker.

Wow...That's an impressive group of kickers you've compared Henery to. How did they fare in the NFL?

I will so throw up if we do.

I came in this thread to post how there's no way in hell we should blow a pick on a kicker, but dang.

What's wrong with Kris Brown???

Oh btw.. from Wikipedia: Kristopher "Kris" Clayton Brown (born December 23, 1976, in Irving, Texas)

This guy was made to kick here. Welcome home Kris.. :laugh2:

Competition for Buehler... "Good" competition... Perfect situation. Why waste a draft pick? Please help me understand...

You can't be serious...I believe his stats speak for themselves; without need to look for reasons why you think he wouldn't be an upgrade over our present situation.

Career pct made FGs: 77.3 %

From wiki:

Brown remained with the Steelers through the 2001 season, but had a crucial field goal blocked in the AFC Championship game that was returned for a touchdown. Brown also struggled in the team's first season at Heinz Field.
Brown missed two game-tying field goals vs the Colts and Titans on Monday Night Football in week 9 and 11 of the 2009 season.

On October 24, 2010, Brown kicked his first field goal as a San Diego Charger against the New England Patriots, later making his second field goal. With 27 seconds left in the game he missed a third field goal which would have tied the game.

Just doesn't sound like the optimum replacement. I hope he does well, but would like more options in camp.

Can't be serious? Why not? How have these other kickers fared in the NFL?
While the kid from Nebraska may be all you want him to be when he reaches the NFL,it's not given that he will be,as evidenced by the kickers you have compared him to.
