We need to stop worrying about Jerry saving money with contracts

How Jerry spends or wastes money is just a symptom of the larger problem. When he waits to sign a player only to pay him millions more than he would have it is just a reminder of what a clueless old fool he appears to be. And he appears to be getting worse. By waiting Jerry keeps the team in turmoil, which he loves but it is bad for the team, IMO.

As a fan of the Cowboys Jerry's last couple of years have been nothing short of embarrassing. All we can do as fans is shrug our shoulders and accept this is what our team has become now. But for me, it is hard to ignore, support, or enjoy. This is a time of year we should be building optimism. Instead we face the reality a clue less owner and GM is dragging this team down the tubes with his apparent dementia.
But he's quick to sign players not at the top end. Right after their 3rd year. But 1st round picks at the top end, he not only waits so he can pay more, but he always waits until after their 4th year, so the cap hits are higher as well. I'm not saying that is always bad, you may have doubts. But to do it as a rule just seems foolish. The Bengals did that with Chase, look where it got them. He wasn't asking for 40m last year, and now his cap hits are ugly.

On a side note to the topic, the system in general is a bit flawed/unfair IMO, to some players and all teams.

Teams only control players not drafted in round one for four seasons. They can’t be offered an extension until after year three, at which point anyone who has become a top player may as well just wait it out and grab an insurance policy for one season against injury.

Many of those types need time before they are able to do much beyond covering kicks. So the team doesn’t get much out of their time, effort and expense of developing them before having to dish out a larger contract, which are limited.

On the other hand a first round pick is subject to a fifth year option and two franchise tags. That’s out of line as well.

Seems to me as if each side would benefit with getting rid of the tag in exchange for an extra year of development time/contract control for the later round guys.

Please give your thoughts……
You can tag players not picked in the first round too. It's only a difference of one year.

I see your point with the tags. But any team that does that isn't concerned with bad cap hits. The 5th year option is best served when you extend the player after his 3rd year. The extension becomes much easier to absorb. See Trevor Lawrence.

At least part of the problem is Jerry likes the attention it all gets more than any potential cap savings.

These agents simply know when they have him and when it’s a player he isn’t willing to lose. Also can’t say things like “Gurley is the starting point” and “we’ve never prepared for life without Dak” then ask for a discount. They love to talk, and it doesn’t help.

As I said previously, I don’t at all believe the savings would be spent on some savior FA from another team. Maybe they’d keep one more piece of the out of tune band in the fold. Wouldn’t change anything.

The problems are WAY deeper than about a 10% overpay due to not being good at being an NFL GM.

You'd be right. When it's all said and done, they don't need the extra money or space. What difference does it make if they overpay, as long as it keeps them in the news.

Zeke did Jerry a favor by forcing that contract. Of the 7 years he was here, he only had 1 bad cap hit. In hindsight we could argue he shouldn't have been paid at all.

All of us at some point has been mad with Jerry for taking too long with signing our own guys who are on pace to get a big deal. We wait and wait and wait, and end up spending more money. Why should we be worried that Jerry is spending extra money, in the end it seems that that's what he likes to do, they just try to fool us by saying bad things about there not being a lot of pie left!

From this day forward, no longer shall we be worried about how much extra Jerry spends especially when we're not using the money as we could/should be, please give your thoughts!!! Hope everyone is well!
The agents drive the market.

Micah is a top $$$ player.

It’s all about Jerry meeting with the agents and accepting their contract.

So now you speaking for The Zone .........thought you wanted to be mod, not the owner
He wants to be neither. He's only interested in being a troll and an attention *****. All of his threads should be merged into one thread and he should be forced to pay for server space to host it.

so is that why the players say it was never about the money?? It's not them its their agents, what about the BROTHERHOOD???

Coogi, we all know that since you’ve posted this, you’ve likely commented about contracts and money a half dozen times.

Appreciate the idea though!

"Don't worry about it." Not because it will all work out favorably but because there's nothing you can do about it.

I’ve always believed, the late signings are due to revenue. There is no revenue at the moment, but at the start of preseason, money starts flowing in.

They all have agents.

Most of them.

I think Cowboy fans subconsciously understand that they will likely never see another SB in this town so long as the Jones family runs the team this way.

I think most are consciously aware of that.

We just dont talk about that this offseason. Because we are not pessimistic anymore. We heard our FO and...

...are now selectivly optimistic. The aggressive way.
