We should support Parcells

I was ready to kick Parcells out of here after this season. Like many of you, I'm disappointed and feel he is largely to blame for our missing the playoffs. However, I was listening to talk radio last night and a caller's take reminded me of something. The caller mentioned the Pittsburgh Steelers' success. They have only had 2 head coaches since 1969. That is a huge reason why they are successful. It's called stability. And that is something we haven't had around here in a long time. Granted some coaches like Dave Campo simply had to go because he was ineffective. But with Parcells, he has at least won 2 Superbowls and did pull of an amazing accomplishment in his first year.

Look, I'm not happy with Parcells' decision to not develop our younger QB's. And I'm not happy that he relies so much on veterans. However, we did finish 9-7. And realistically, who are we going to get that is better than Parcells? Jimmy Johnson isn't coming although I would prefer that. And with a young college head coach or a proven assistant coach in the NFL, you are rolling the dice. Sure, we could get lucky and grab another Andy Reid but the odds are we would get an assistant who would become a bust.

Sure, I'm not thrilled by this year's progress like some are. We were 7-3 and to finish 9-7 is disappointing, but, our best option is to stick with Parcells and build some stability.

What stability? Parcells is 64, he may coach another 2 or 3 years maximum. Cowher was and still is relatively young. Apples and oranges.

I would take those additional 2-3 years because at least we could have a solid base of talent for our next head coach to work with. Realistically, who are we going to get that is better than Parcells, Mike Sherman, Dom Capers?

Seriously, the available candidates are not that impressive. When Greg Williams was getting a lot of love, you know the candidate market isn't impressive.

As lovely as that all may seem, Cowher has done no more than Schotty over the years.

Cowher has been to the SB once, which I am sure most of you remember.

Nice to have that continuity, would be nicer to have some jewelry to go along with it.

How many AFC conference championships has he been to? I would love to win a Superbowl sure. However, it would also be nice to be mentioned as a true Superbowl contender nearly every year too. Trust me, it's a nice feeling when you are rolling through the airport and they have every pro football journal available at their newstands. And when a few of those journals has a photo of Dallas with "Superbowl" predictions etc., that's a good feeling and makes the season more fun to watch even if Dallas fails to get to the Superbowl.

Don't get me wrong, I didn't agree with his decision to start Bledsoe this year. I would have preferred he developed Henson and brought some young blood on offense. However, the pragmatist in me knows that we will not get a better head coach and we could use some stability.

We should support Bill.....by sending him a manzier. :D

On a serious note...the man is stubborn and sometimes that is good and bad.

I do think he has made this team better with some young players.

I think he has made mistakes with some of the O-Linemen.

But all in all I will support him...because I know it could be MUCH worse and not too many coaches out there really grab my attention.

For years I have heard so and so HAS to be better, or it can't get worse, when talking about players...and I have seen those players get replaced many times only to see it get worse.

So if someone popped up that really grabbed my attention then I would be on the bandwagon to replace Bill...however at this point nobody really makes me drool when it comes to being the next head coach of the dallas cowboys.

All of the coaches I may want...are locked up elsewhere.

One of the coaches I would not mind...is just not coming back no matter how many times some people post it on this forum.

So...I see some improvement on this team....I would like to see if another offseason and good draft can help make this a very good Defense.

I think he is 1-4 in AFCCGs. Right up there with Andy Reid.

At some point you have to win, given that kind of time and the talent/success that the D and running game have shown over the years. They have a QB now. Maybe that will be the difference. Who knows.

They had Roethlisberger in the playoffs last year. Didn't help. You know that's why all the Steeler fans have terrible towels, so they can clean up the mess when their team shats the bed in the playoffs. But at least they do make it there with some regularity.

Agree, we have to stop getting used to a mediocre mind set around here.

We're supposed to be a superbowl thinking fan base, and it's sickening to think that we're drooling over a 9-7 season and moral victories and average QB play (Bledsoe) this is rediculous.

People are whinning over keeping Bledsoe/Ellis/Glover, these boys have won jack **** IMO, and so has Cowher. Yeah, he keeps them competative every year, but I don't give a squat, I want rings, and we should all want rings.

And when you have a Commanders fan having to let us know this, we're in serious trouble.

Everything is relative. When you haven't been mentioned as Superbowl contender in 10 years, getting to one NFC championship feels pretty good let alone being mentioned as a possible contender. I'm not saying Cowher is the best coach of all time. But I am saying that we could learn something from Pittsburgh in that stability can be a good thing.

Pittsburgh has continually let top players go through FA without paying the top dollar neccessary to keep them.

For ex P Burress and Kendrell Bell just last year.

I would take Cowher as a coach over 90% of all NFL coaches right now!

And we also have to be realistic. You can dream all you want but then you need to take a deep breath and think quietly. It's not as easy as firing Parcells and hiring some young assistant. Like I said, who are we going to get that is better.

You remind me of the 49er fans who wanted Mariucci out because he wasn't winning Superbowls. That wasn't a bad idea, but you should never fire someone when you don't have an equal or better replacement in waiting. Look what happened to the 49ers when Mooch left, they absolutely imploded. Mooch may have been terrible with the Lions but he had chemistry with the Niners and the players in SF respected him (which he didn't have in Detroit).

We didn't make the playoffs this year but who are we going to get that is better than Parcells right now? If Jimmy Johnson called me and said he wanted the job, I would fire Parcells no questions asked but I live in the real world.

I believe supporting Bill Parcells will prove to be a
winner as time goes along. This team has a blend of
good young players and solid veterans, and with a few needed
areas to be upgraded, they'll compete for years to come.Oh,and
btw,how old is Joe Paterno? 71 i think. Bill may be down for
personal reasons, but the game has not passed him by.

I'd support IF he was tutoring someone on staff to be his replacement...I don't see anyone remotely ready to take the team over...and I don't see Parcells prepping someone.

Ya know, control freaks control more as things get worse.

There is zero loosening of the reigns. Coaches can't talk to the media. Back up QB's sit on the bench even when games are meaningless.

There simply seems to be no transition plan for anything.

I often compare things to business because in fact, a football franchise is a business. In every business, there needs to be a clear cut, second in charge IF there is a transition plan in place.

So...that said, who's the second in charge with the Cowboys?

Great point, I completely forgot about that. With the type of turnover the Steelers have every year, it's amazing they are this consistent.

bill is not the long term answer. but he brings the stability to build this team, and most important thing of all he keeps jerry out of the draft. you have to understand that jerry is not gonna give just anyone the draft. he respects bill alot and does give him that control. sherman, stoops, bates, frenz, these guys are not gonna get that respect and have'nt earned it yet

I think they want you to believe it's Payton.

But like you said...It's not clear cut. And I don't want Payton anyway.
