Source: Bengals' Johnson may sit out 2008 season if he's not traded
By Chris Mortensen
ESPN.com

Bengals wide receiver Chad Johnson feels betrayed by head coach Marvin Lewis and is privately threatening to sit out the 2008 season if he isn't traded, according to a source.

Johnson was upset after the coach quit speaking to his receiver early in the season, according to the source.

The Bengals star wideout has been making the rounds with the media at the Super Bowl. When asked on Jim Rome's radio show this week about whether or not he was happy with Bengals, Johnson sounded less than happy.

"I'm not allowed to say. I get the blame; the so-called best player, I'm the problem. Someone in-house is spreading this. Maybe they want me to quiet down [and] stop being me. That is not going to happen. I can't function that way. I tried it. It sucked. There was no excitement."

Lewis has said he won't trade Johnson, who finished with a single-season franchise-record 1,440 receiving yards. Johnson has had six consecutive seasons with at least 1,000 receiving yards and is under contract with the Bengals through 2011 after signing a $35.5 million extension in April 2006.

"Obviously, there is a lot of frustration with things that happened last year as it pertains to Chad," Johnson's agent, Drew Rosenhaus told The Cincinnati Enquirer.

Rosenhaus tried to explain his client's recent statements to the media.

"What Chad is doing [in the radio interviews] is expressing his emotions and frustration."

Chris Mortensen is an NFL analyst for ESPN. Information from the Associated Press was used in this report.

I would have a major problem trading a one for a guy in this situation. Major problem.

I can't imagine the Bengals' are dumb enough to want to take that kind of a cap hit.

Ditto.

I wouldn't give a number 1 for him either.

I don't see us making this move but I honestly wouldn't be upset about it if we did bring him in.

To me, TO doesn't have anything to do with it. I just wouldn't want the guy on my team. He's a show pony, we could be losing by 21 pts, he'll score and still be showing his arse. He's a decent WR but I wouldn't want him wearing the star. No thanks!!!

I agree. A receiver of his caliber, talent of his caliber is always something I would welcome.

That would be gross overcompensation for Chad, IMO.

I thought he just turned 30? If I'm off on that then I'd seriously reconsider my thoughts on it. But I thought he just did turn 30 giving him potentially 4-5 more years of being productive.

If thats not the case then I'd have to think about that totally differently.

I think he is one of the better WRs in the league for sure. I don't think there is any question regarding his talent.

I'm not sure what excatly is going on in Cincin, but i wonder if part of the problem is the fact that TJ Housh was developing into a quality WR also and if one or both of thier egos couldn't handle it. If that's the case then Dallas is defenintly not a place for him, since we already have TO.

As far as his antics go, i know i was one of those who couldn't even imagine TO wearing the star. Same goes with Deon before he joined the organization. I've gotten to a point that if a player can come in and help this team win, i'm all for it.

Can we afford him? That's a different story!

You left about about five "majors" as far as I'm concerned...

No way would I want this idiot on my team. He thinks he has it bad now? Send him to a team without Carson Palmer.

Send a 1st for a guy that's over 30? Not likely.

Why not?
We have two firsts but both are late.

The guy is a top 10 WR, even if a headache.
He plays hard and plays hurt.
He is a KJ type worker with the T.O. athleticism and need to be paid attention to.

If we could add any top flight Wr with a late first I would do it. This is a team with Super Bowl aspirations.

They could have Marcus Spears or Bobby Carpenter... late first are generally not can't miss prospects, Chad Johnson is a can't miss player.

Because you'll be lucky to even get a full contract out of the guy. And there's zero shot at a second contract.

With a 1st round pick, you should get at least 2 contracts out of him, and sometimes 3.

they could easily co-exist CJ isnt selfish ...look at balls he split with TJ whos-yo-momma......he just wants to win...

he never starts problems on or off field ......

he is an exciting player who likes to show boat and have fun....no different than say a ----Michael Irvin....

he only runs mouth when team is doing well ...when they suck he shuts up like he should....

Marvin Lewis even says hes hardest worker on team....he likes attention...so what....He IS NOT A TROUBLEMAKER.......hes tired of being on a loser of a team....and a coach that cant control his players.....

and he and T.O. are friends and they both are getting up in age ...and they are ready to win a ring before its too late.....

I say bring him on....but id still rather have the other Roy (hes younger)

and would everyone stop with the " we could trade Spears and Carp for him routine" if we can tell they suck from our TVs at home NFL coaches can tell by watching game tapes

I'd trade a 1 so fast the unform would be printed before the Philly Inquirer could assign a cub reporter to the story to complain about the Eagles inaction--how can a probowl reciever not be worth a draft pick that last year would have brought Robert Meachum?
