We are so good that we are winning with the poorest defensive calls possibly in the league. Ok, I wont go that far but here goes.
A. Demarcus Ware starts the game in coverage and plays several meaningful downs there too. I can see every now and then but come on, hes not here to cover people, hes here to sack the QB. Also, Bradie James and Greg Ellis man up with Westbrook on a few plays tonight. Why?????
B. We play the same darn coverage in the secondary on every play. Newman's in the slot, in man coverage verse the slot reciever for the first 5 yards, he then lets him go and wanders over near the sideline and sits down{you know covering his zone). Hes a ghost over there, all the recievers are already 5 yards behind him leaving him to do nothing. Next, Henry and Jones play 8 yards off on every play. They drop 20 yards down the field and play safties. This leaves anywhere from 5-10 yard stops, ins, slants or outs to be had at any time of the night. The frustrating part was in the 4th quarter on 3rd and 3, they were still playing 8 yards off. The Eagles just threw it out wide and got 5 yards and a new set of downs. Lucky Westbrook fumbled. The safties play back 20 yards but look for the recievers who run the deep posts, ins or slants and look for the interception or the pass break up. As you can see by tonight and in all big games last season, good teams know how to beat this coverage. Watch the game again if you can and look for these things.
In addition, I dont know if you noticed but most of McNabbs passes were completed on each hash marks. This is because of the coverage I just mentioned. Thats the area that is wide open; right behind Newman and between the dropping corners and upcoming safties. Mcnabb killed us there tonight and we never changed. I ask anyone to find more than one play that our corners played man to man bump coverage. Let me know what time and what quarter because I didnt find any time which baffles me. Why get good corners to only play like there free agents off the street and were protecting them. We play scared and that style got us beat last year in the playoffs. The Gmen played bump n run and blitz us while we played prevent(end of the 1st half is a prime example.) They went on we didnt. I almost forgot too, is it a wonder why we have zero ints in 2 games? Its kinda hard to pick a pass off when your in this coverage.
In closing, these difficencies dont show their ugly head unless we play a good team. Even then our offense is so good it hides this. The sad part is it usually never hides for a whole season. It got us last year when it counted the most and were back in the same spot. We added Jones, Jenkins and Scandrick but the question begs to be answered does it matter? If your going to play Quarters, Cover 4 the whole game then you need corners who can tackle not cover. Im glad we won but wish I can sit down with Brian Stewart and Wade Phillps for 30 minutes and have a nice Q and A session with them.
