Week 16 playoff clinching scenarios

27 of the 32 teams still in playoff contention in week 16.

Kind of puts that recent thread of the Cowboys beating 7 playoff contenders in proper perspective. Means nothing. Everybody's a playoff contender these days.

Maybe, but how many of those 27 teams would still be in playoff contention if the Cowboys had lost those 7 games and improved the record of those 7 teams?

I agree with your premise though that you cannot claim to beat a "playoff team" until they actually make the playoffs, but I also think we sometimes forget that the Cowboys wins are part of the non-WIN/add-LOSS stats for the teams they defeated.

Meaning that is a factor in not just with playoff eligible teams, but also things like "teams with winning records".

For example, the Eagles are 7-7 right now but the Cowboys beat them. As it is most people would not say the Eagles have a winning record, but if the Cowboys had not beaten them, they would be 8-6 right now and even if you simply remove the Cowboys game from their standings, they would be 7-6, which is still a winning record.

In any case, the Cowboys have beaten good and bad teams and lost to good and bad teams, but the quality of those wins cannot be defined until the regular season ends.

Just beat Wash and we’re East Champs. At home on SNF….no excuses. But I get the feeling this won’t be as easy as the other game.

Very true, Bossman, but you can do that with most every team. For instance, the Eagles beat the Saints. If you take that Eagles game out of the equation the Saints have a winning record.

I was specifically talking about when comparing the Cowboys to other teams they played, or rather defeated in this case, and how those wins added losses to those team's records which impacts their playoff position (and others indirectly).

I am pretty sure Tampa beats Carolina this week.
I am pretty sure Dallas beats Washington this week too.

How the heck does a Tampa Bay win clinches the playoffs for us?

If TB is going to lose a game it will be this week @ Carolina. Probably unlikely, but they do have a ton of key injuries. Maybe Cam has a 2015 flashback for a few hours Sunday afternoon. Maybe....

I still say Dallas already clinched at least a WC spot.
NFL trying their best to deny this.

The other take on this, is that these potential playoff teams, many play each other over the next 3 weeks. So some of them will have worse records and miss the playoffs.
So how many will use that in a negative way after the fact they miss the playoffs, as opposed to some using that as a positive fact for now.

Bottom line, we are 10-4. And will be in the playoffs, So what teams we beat or lost to, does not matter at that point.
