Normally I can dig into all kinds of info for these Primer threads. There really isn't much I can dig into as it pertains to the Texans.

First of all I have to tell you, I think Texans is a really dumb mascot name. I didn't like it for the now Kansas City Chiefs, and I don't like it now. Maybe part of that is that I genuinely admired the Houston Oilers and "Luv Ya Blue." Part of it is that it is just a plain boring mascot name. They chose the name to honor the defunct Wold Football League team of the same name.

So I think I will start there for this primer. The History of Professional Football in the city of Houston, Texas.

The Houston Oilers were one of the original eight teams in the AFL. Owned by Bud Adams he sought to hire a native Texan named Tom Landry to be his Head Coach. Landry was also sought after by Clint Murchison and Tex Schramm of the Dallas Cowboys. He chose the established security of the NFL over the AFL and the rest is History.

Bud Adams has always seemed to have a deep seated resentment towards the city of Dallas and the Cowboys. Perhaps Landry spurning his offer is the genesis of this. I like to think so.

The Oilers were the AFL Champions in 1960 and 1961. The first two years of AFL existence. I think Adams always has felt Landry turned down a better team to coach the Cowboys. Maybe he did. Regardless of Landry's reasons, you can't argue with the ultimate results.

In 1970 the AFL-NFL merger happened. It opened the door to a head to head series between the interstate rivals. In 1970 in the final game of the season the Oilers came to Dallas and Tom Landry handed Bud Adams a 52-10 headache. That win gave the Cowboys their 4th straight Division crown and a path to the playoffs. They would go on to their first Super Bowl ever.

Bud Adams team settled for a 3-10-1 season their first n the NFL and he saw the ever more popular Cowboys take a stranglehold on the state of Texas that they have never relinquished.

The game was played on Bob Hayes birthday and oh, did he ever celebrate in a big way. Hayes caught 6 passes for 187 yards and 4 TDs. When the game ended he had passed Frank Clarke as the Cowboys all time leading receiver. Happy Birthday Bullet.

By the end of that game the Dallas Cowboys vaunted Doomsday defense had not allowed an Offensive TD in 17 straight quarters.

Tom Landry would face the Houston Oilers 6 times in his time in Dallas. He held a 4-2 advantage over Bud Adams' squad. Jimmy Johnson lost in his only game against the Oilers, Barry Switzer won in his only game against them. Thus the Cowboys record against the Houston Oilers was 5-3.

The Cowboys were 3-1 in the games played at Houston.

In 1996 Bud Adams took the Oilers to Tennessee and the interstate rivalry died. The Governor's Cup series was temporarily over. Adams was extremely frustrated over his inability to secure a new stadium for the Oilers to play in. At the time of its original construction in 1965 the Astrodome was one of the true sports marvels in the world.

Six years after the Oilers left Hosuton in the rearview mirror the NFL awarded the City of Houston it's 32nd franchise. Bob McNair, he founded a business in Houston in 1960 that in 1999 was sold to Enron. So as you might guess he is involved in energy or power companies. McNair was actually awarded the Houston franchise in 1999, but they did not get started until 2002.

Part of his ownership in the NFL was that the team get a new Stadium. Reliant Stadium. Reliant Stadium is the first ever professional sports stadium with a retractable roof. Manhattan Construction built Reliant Stadium and also built our very own Cowboys Stadium. My how retractable roofs have evolved in such a short time.

The Texans first ever game was against the Dallas Cowboys in 2002. That game will forever be one in which I would like to punch Dave Campo and Quincy Carter until I am too tired to punch any more. It is the first time in NFL History that a rookie QB on an expansion team won his first NFL game. There were 20 penalties in the game, 9 by Dallas. The final score was 10-19, Houston.

The Cowboys lone touchdown that day was a 46 yard run by Michael Wiley.

Last weeks victory over Indianapolis may have finally replaced that win as the most important in Texans History. If the Texans beat us this week, I guarantee you this will be the crowning game in their History so far.

You see, they have no History to this point. They are the only team in the four major professional sports leagues to never have played a post season game. That's right, every other team in the NFL, MLB, NBA, and NHL has played in the post season and the hapless Texans have not.

They aren't just a little brother to Dallas over there, they're the runt of all organized sports. Their win loss record is 51-79. That is a .392 winning %. The worst in NFL history by a fairly wide margin.

The Cowboys and Texans are tied in the all time series. in 2006 the Texans visited Texas Stadium and left with a 34-6 bad taste in their mouths. That day Terrell owens caught 3 TD passes, the last one courtesy of a 2 yard pass from Tony Romo who came in to mop up for Drew Bledsoe and provided Cowboys fans their first real glimpse into the future. Romo completed his first 2 passes in the NFL, the 2nd was the TD to Owens, the first was a 33 yard strike to Sam Hurd.

Sunday breaks the 1-1 tie. Including the pre-season, the home team has won every matchup between the 2 teams. We can't have that Sunday, but it probably won't be easy.

great post Hostile. I love these primers b/c I learn so many interesting facts.

Do you know when Reliant will host the Super Bowl again (They hosted it in 2004 according to wiki)? I would like to one day have a primer on how the Super Bowl location is chosen. Thanks.

Reliant is a beautiful stadium but why host the SB there when you can go a few miles up the road and sell 30K more tickets at JerryWorld.

And the NFL is all about making money.

the 2nd coming of the Browns have made the playoffs?
No, but they are still considered the original Browns by agreement with the NFL.

Great post dude, I really like that kind of info myself. I didn't want them to take Texans because of the old Texans franchise in Dallas as well. Plus the Houston Texans just doesn't sound very cool IMHO. Isn't McNair involved someway in equestrian sports? If I'm not mistaken, the Stallions were one of the proposed mascot names for the Houston expansion franchise. Houston Stallions would have sounded much better. That, or something with a NASA theme.

Yes, there were six choices. Oilers was not available but it should have been.

Wildcatters
Toros
Stallions
Texans
Apollos
Bobcats

I think they all suck.

Thanks man. I remember a couple of them now. Could you imagine the Houston Toros? :lmao: What were they thinking? That is hellarious!! Stallions is by far the best of the bunch I think. They should have gotten the Houston public school system to have a contest and let the kids choose their mascot names.

That's the one I thought was going to win.

They made it in 2002, so either way it fits.

How many people are going to want to stand during the entire Super Bowl? What is Jerry going to do with those "Party Pass" things?

Bud Adams owns the Oilers name, so it could have never been the choice. I like the Stallions name, but I like Texans better. It's grown on me. Bud Adams still sucks though. Dude got all of the upgrades he wanted for the Astrodome in the late 80s/early 90s, but then teams started getting new stadiums and he wanted one, too. The City of Houston said hell no, Bud Adams said he was leaving, we said bye. There is a reason why Bud still lives in Houston.
