This morning I was awakened by my wife who needed me to do one of those things only a husband can; open a jar.
Monday, in Arlington, Texas that is exactly what I want the Dallas Cowboys to do more than anything in the world. I want them to open a can instead of a jar, and you all damn well know what is in that can. Don't make me spell it out for you! Too late, I have to say it, I want them to open up a big old can of whoop ***!
Prime Time television. That is our domain. Cowboys stadium the new battleground. The war is not new at all, it has raged for 51 years and this is 52.
The all time regular season series stands at 60-38-2. 34-13-2 at home and 2-0 in the new house.
Commanders fans created the chant "We want Dallas, we want Dallas." Be careful what you wish for children, because you just might get it and what the Commanders have gotten more than any other team in the NFL is whooped. That's right folks, the 60 victories by the Cowboys are more wins than they have over any other opponent. The Giants and Eagles are tied at 56 apiece and the Cardinals, by virtue of their parole from the NFC East whipping post stand at 55.
I would like nothing more than to tell you fellow Cowboys fans that our 60 wins is the most against them, but I can't do that. You see the Giants and Eagles as well as the Commanders were in the NFL together for many years before the Cowboys arrived in 1960. The Eagles have beaten them 66 times and the Giants have beaten them 89 times. However, on the positive side the Commanders .388 winning % against the Cowboys is their worst effort against any NFC team. Only AFC teams with far fewer games played can claim better success against the Commanders than Dallas.
This is why we are their Super Bowl. "We want Dallas, we want Dallas." Of course they do. We are the caravan, they are the little yapping dogs barking at us as we travel on by. What do we care about a few yapping dogs? The caravan moves on. They want us, but History has shown that they often cannot handle us.
You will hear the yapping this week. It happens every year. Dallas is on the schedule, here come the Commanders fans and their lame comments. You're going to hear all about 2005. What about it? Oh, that was their last season sweep of the Cowboys. They cherish it like it is some kind of magical season. I get that, because even though I am not a psychologist and just play one on the Internet, I know that in our 51 year History against them they only have 4 season sweeps, so the last one must be precious. Meanwhile we have busted out the brooms on them 15 times.
If they pull off a victory, and they are certainly capable of it, be prepared, because I promise you the lunatic fringe is going to be in full view for all to see. "We Want Dallas, we want Dallas." You see, George Allen sold them on that idea. He was so obsessed with beating Dallas that it was all he could think about. He made hatred of them a vogue thing in a way. That's why I respect him. But truth be told, Saint George was only in the Nation's Capital for seven years and the best he ever did was earn a split with the Cowboys his first six years. For all his machinations and mantras George was 6-8 against Tom Landry and the Cowboys.
That's the stuff of legend in this rivalry. Or as close as it gets I guess you could say. The Commanders do own two very significant wins over the Cowboys. Twice in the NFC Championship, in their house, where they were heavily favored, they did prevail. Dallas has never beaten Washington in the post season. Mostly because the two teams rarely get there in the same years or because many of the years they did Washington failed to advance to where they could. But the two times they were the heavy favorites they did win. Kudos to them for that.
In every other way in the world this rivalry is more lopsided than a teeter totter with a child on one side and an adult on the other. Last year began a new decade in the rivalry. There are five previous ones. The Cowboys hold a sizable winning advantage in every one of them. In the 1960's it was 10-7-2 on Dallas side of the ledger. In the 1970's it was 12-8. In the 1980's it was 11-8.
If you wonder about the odd number of games given the fact division rivals have to head series I have to remind you about the 1982 strike shortened season. The Cowboys delivered the Commanders their only loss on that season where they went on to the Super Bowl. That's one of the years we lost to them in the NFC Championship. The other was 1972. Oh yeah, Roger Staubach was hurt that year and we all know how easy it was to beat Craig Morton in big games. But Kudos to the Commanders.
In the 1990's it was again 12-8. In the 2000's it was 14-6 despite the 3 worst consecutive years of our History other than the expansion years. Our worst coach in our History, Dave Campo, was the Commanders daddy as he won a full one third of his 15 victories at their expense. The Mad Poodle was 5-1 against them.
We even own a winning record against them in their house where it stands at 26-25. "They want Dallas. They want Dallas." Pardon the theft, but they can't handle Dallas. Just like that little dog thinks he is scaring the caravan away with his yapping when in reality the caravan barely notices the dog. In my now 41 years as a Cowboys fan I have never once seen Cowboys fans chant "We want Washington, we want Washington."
Know why? There's never been a reason to fear them. No reason to pretend to be the bigger, badder cat when we are. Think about this for a second. In order to pull this rivalry even they would have to sweep us this year and the next 10 years. 22 straight victories for them. Given the fact that their longest streak in the History of the rivalry is 4 straight games I'm not too worried about that happening.
The game is on Monday Night Football. The Cowboys hold the all time record on Monday Night football at 42-29. This will be the 15th time these two teams have squared off on MNF. The all time record stands at 7-7. That's why we gotta open up that can. Can't give them one more thing to brag about even though they have so little to actually do it about. To do it we only need to reverse the most disgusting stat in our History. 7 straight losses in Nationally televised games. The last team we beat, the Commanders on SNF in 2009. Let them be the bookend on that nonsense.
