Every year I try to do at least something informative for you. I've added a couple of recipes in the past. Nothing huge, just some light talk.
This week I thought I would give you a breakdown of every season we have started 2-2, since that is where we are now. Here you go.
1965, finished the year 7-7, 2nd place in the NFL East behind the Cleveland Browns.
1988, finished the year and the Tom Landry era at 3-13.
1991, finished the year 11-5 and a wildcard birth in the playoffs where we defeated the Bears in the Wildcard round and then in the Divisional Round lost 38-6 to the Detroit Lions.
1993, perhaps the one more people will know without having to look it up than any other. Emmitt Smith was a contract holdout and we lost our first 2 games. When Jerry Jones entered the locker room after our week 2 loss to the Bills 13-10, Charles Haley was waiting for him. He threw his helmet so hard it embedded in the wall next to Jerry Jones. A stunned Jones turned to face a glaring Haley who screamed at him, "We'll never win with this __________ rookie RB!" Lassic, who had fumbled twice in the game and had been ineffective running the ball, was within earshot of the raging Haley. Jimmy Johnson would say that questions about Emmitt's holdout made him sick to his stomach. Smith got his contract and Dallas returned to the Super Bowl to defeat those same Bills, 30-13.
1998, the Chan Gailey era. Dallas finsihed 10-6, and won the NFC East, only to lose in the playoffs to a Cardinals team they had swept during the season.
2002, the end of the Campo era. Can you believe he ever started 2-2? Well he did. If it hadn't been for the Cardinals going 3-13 in 2000, he would have had 3 straight last places finishes for this team in the NFC East. Emmitt broke the rushing record. Quincy got the hook in favor of the Cardinals relief pitcher, and Cowboys fans got the shaft.
2004, year 2 of the Parcells era. The Vinny Testaverde year. 3rd place in the NFC East after a 6-10 season.
2005, year 3 of the Parcells era. Drew Bledsoe became the FOB retread of choice at QB and we finished 9-7 in 3rd place in the NFC East.
2006, end of the Parcells era. 3 of his 4 years here we started 2-2. This year ushered in the Tony Romo era as he replaced the ineffective Drew Bledsoe.
2009, nearly the end of the Wade Phillips era. The Cowboys would go on to win the NFC East with an 11-5 record and would end a post season losing streak of 6 games that covered 14 years of frustration. The next week however their season ended in a crushing defeat to the Vikings.
That's it folks, 10 times in our History before this year we have started a season 2-2. This is the 11th time. People will no doubt tell you how we are going to finish, but just like all those years, no one really knows. The season has to play out and there is no telling which way the football Gods will smile. It has been as good as a Super Bowl Championship and as bad as the end of a legend's time in Dallas, and everywhere in between.
Enjoy the bye.
