Every year I try to do at least something informative for you. I've added a couple of recipes in the past. Nothing huge, just some light talk.

This week I thought I would give you a breakdown of every season we have started 2-2, since that is where we are now. Here you go.

1965, finished the year 7-7, 2nd place in the NFL East behind the Cleveland Browns.

1988, finished the year and the Tom Landry era at 3-13.

1991, finished the year 11-5 and a wildcard birth in the playoffs where we defeated the Bears in the Wildcard round and then in the Divisional Round lost 38-6 to the Detroit Lions.

1993, perhaps the one more people will know without having to look it up than any other. Emmitt Smith was a contract holdout and we lost our first 2 games. When Jerry Jones entered the locker room after our week 2 loss to the Bills 13-10, Charles Haley was waiting for him. He threw his helmet so hard it embedded in the wall next to Jerry Jones. A stunned Jones turned to face a glaring Haley who screamed at him, "We'll never win with this __________ rookie RB!" Lassic, who had fumbled twice in the game and had been ineffective running the ball, was within earshot of the raging Haley. Jimmy Johnson would say that questions about Emmitt's holdout made him sick to his stomach. Smith got his contract and Dallas returned to the Super Bowl to defeat those same Bills, 30-13.

1998, the Chan Gailey era. Dallas finsihed 10-6, and won the NFC East, only to lose in the playoffs to a Cardinals team they had swept during the season.

2002, the end of the Campo era. Can you believe he ever started 2-2? Well he did. If it hadn't been for the Cardinals going 3-13 in 2000, he would have had 3 straight last places finishes for this team in the NFC East. Emmitt broke the rushing record. Quincy got the hook in favor of the Cardinals relief pitcher, and Cowboys fans got the shaft.

2004, year 2 of the Parcells era. The Vinny Testaverde year. 3rd place in the NFC East after a 6-10 season.

2005, year 3 of the Parcells era. Drew Bledsoe became the FOB retread of choice at QB and we finished 9-7 in 3rd place in the NFC East.

2006, end of the Parcells era. 3 of his 4 years here we started 2-2. This year ushered in the Tony Romo era as he replaced the ineffective Drew Bledsoe.

2009, nearly the end of the Wade Phillips era. The Cowboys would go on to win the NFC East with an 11-5 record and would end a post season losing streak of 6 games that covered 14 years of frustration. The next week however their season ended in a crushing defeat to the Vikings.

That's it folks, 10 times in our History before this year we have started a season 2-2. This is the 11th time. People will no doubt tell you how we are going to finish, but just like all those years, no one really knows. The season has to play out and there is no telling which way the football Gods will smile. It has been as good as a Super Bowl Championship and as bad as the end of a legend's time in Dallas, and everywhere in between.

Enjoy the bye.

man, you and I have had some differences of opinion occasionally but I have to tell you that this forum is better because people like you are here

GREAT JOB and thanx for doing this for all cowboy fans

i always hate the bye, by the way

Thanks for that summary, Hos. Wow, I had completely forgotten that the 1988 team started 2-2 only to go 1-11 from there on out. What a depressing ending for Landry.

I mentioned in another thread that this year reminds me a lot of 2009. Even the feeling on Romo after 2-2 is similar. Austin emerged against KC in week 5 of 2009 and Austin comes back from injury in week 5 this season. This team will start surging after NE.

Not the way you want to see Tom Landry go out.

Great read, Hos. I'm always a fan of the bye because it lets me do something different with my Sunday for one week out of 17 :)

Thank you. I do too man. It seems like it takes an eternity whereas the weeks we are playing fly by at blink and miss speed.

I was going to mention that and decided against it. I agree, it feels very similar.

I think it can be. I still have a 10-6 feel. I believe we will beat the Patriots.

I've always thought 9-10 wins most likely, with hopefully a lil upside. Even though this lost was horrible, at 2-2, I still don't see any reason why we won't attain this number of wins.

Definitely has a similar feel. Started off 2-2. The thing that was much better about that season's start is that we had our bye AFTER the big Miles/KC win. That was a much better feeling than this one going into the bye. Everything seemed to be collapsing when we lost back to back games later in that season and dropped to 8-5. All the critics and "realists" were out in full force with "I told u so" comments. Then what happened? Romo and co. went into undefeated N.O. and kick butt! Then we shut out the foreskins on the road, then we shut-out the eagirls in a winner-takes-the div game! Oh yeah, then we spanked them AGAIN the next week in the playoffs! Man, I wish we had a QB that could come up big like that in "big games" or a QB like the one that saved us in weeks 2 and 3 this season despite being injured. Instead we got this guy that never gets it done.... ;) It's a long season fellas and I think we've got a very good team. Every game matters and we certainly can't keep giving wins away - but it's a marathon not a sprint. We've got 3/4 of a season left to take over this unimpressive division and do some really good things.

Can you see why Landry is so beloved? 22 of his 29 seasons were either 3-1 or 4-0.

Thanks for reminding me again why I can't stand Dave Campo! :bang2: :bang2: :bang2:

Great stuff Hos.

The bye week began in 1990. That means Tom Landry never had a season with a bye week in his 29 year career.

In 1993, there were 2 bye weeks.

The Cowboys overall are 18-4 in the games directly before going into a bye week.

The Cowboys overall are 16-6 in games following the bye week.

The latest bye week the Cowboys have ever had was week 14 in 1990. Now no teams have bye weeks later than week 10.

The earliest is week 3 in 1999 and 2003.

The most common bye week for the Cowboys has been week 4 which has been their bye week 6 times counting this year. Followed closely by weeks 8 and 6, each of which has been 4 times counting this season, next week.

The Cowboys had never had a bye week in week 5 until this season.

Jimmy Johnson was 5-0 going into a bye week. 3-2 coming out of a bye week.

Barry Switzer was 3-1 going into a bye week. 4-0 coming out of a bye week.

Chan Gailey was 1-1 going into a bye week. 2-0 coming out of a bye week.

Dave Campo was 2-1 going into a bye week. 1-2 coming out of a bye week.

Bill Parcells was 4-0 going into a bye week. 3-1 coming out of a bye week.

Wade Phillips was 3-1 going into a bye week. He was 3-1 coming out of a bye week. The only loss was last year.

Great info, all of it.

I know Past results are not indicative of future performance, so it;s hard to say how this 2-2 will pan out.

I know this isn't the '93 2-2 team that was coming off of a Super Bowl and lost mostly because of a contract holdout.

I also know we ain't got no stinking Campo at head coach...

Looking at the Division I don't see any team to fear. Not even the Dream Team.

The two losses at this point are heart breaking because they were completely and totally winnable games. Had we held on in each one, you would have heard the Jets and Detroit talking about how they were straight up beat by a better team, no flukes.

All in all it still feels like 10-11 wins and a division title is more than doable. Anything less than a wildcard will really chap my hide, and I don't see it happening.

Great post. I said before that 10-6 would be less than I expect for this team, even if they were to win the NFC East crown with that record. I think they need to be at least 11-5 and I can see it. The hardest part of the schedule is over after New England in 10 days.
