The Tennessee Titans began in 1960 just like the Dallas Cowboys. They were the Houston Oilers and were owned by Bud Adams, an oil tycoon who had tried several times to land an NFL team and failed. His original price for the team was a mere $25,000.00. Consider today how much they are worth. Quite an investment return.

Many of us have mentioned the jealousy Bud Adams has against the Cowboys. Perhaps this will explain it a little. When the AFL was being created Bud Adams sought to hire Tom Landry, the Defensive Coordinator of the Giants to be his first Head Coach. Landry instead opted to sign with the Dallas Cowboys.

In 1960 there were 3 professional football teams in Texas. The hapless 0-11-1 Dallas Cowboys in the NFL, the 8-6 Dallas Texans (who become the Kansas City Chiefs) of the AFL, and the Houston Oilers, also of the AFL.

It is amazing that football fans would choose a winless team over an 8-6 team, but they did. An even bigger slap was dealt to the Oilers. They were 10-4 and won the first AFL Championship over the Los Angeles Chargers. In fact the Oilers won the first two AFL Championships, both over the Chargers who moved to San Diego in 1961, and they lost to the Dallas Texans in the 3rd AFL Championship. The game went to a double overtime to decide the winner or the Oilers could have been 3 time AFL Champions.

In other words, the Oilers were a good football team. The Oilers returned to the AFL Championship in 1967, only to lose it.

In 1968 Bud Adams and the Oilers unveiled football the state of the art stadium known as the Astrodome. It was the Cadillac of stadiums at the time. The first indoor stadium. They subleased the stadium from the Astros.

Still, despite this success it was the Dallas Cowboys of the more established NFL who captured the hearts of Texas. No wonder Bud hates us.

Due to belonging to the AFL instead of the NFL the two main teams of Texas did not face each other in an interstate series. When the AFL-NFL merger of 1970 happened it opened the or to this rivalry.

Houston came to Dallas and got their butts handed to them in a 52-10 blow out. 4 years later Dallas went to Houston and shut the Oilers out 10-0. That is how the rivalry began.

In 1975 the Oilers hired their Defensive Coordinator "Bum" Phillips to be their Head Coach. Phillips was a former Marine who joined the Corps after the bombing of Pearl Harbor. After WWII he enrolled at Stephen F. Austin and began a tour of Texas Football at the High School, College, and pro levels. He coached under Paul "Bear" Bryant at Texas A & M. He also coached in San Diego and Houston under HOF Coach Sid Gillman. His coaching tree was full.

Bum's son, Wade, now the Head Coach of the Dallas Cowboys was the DL Coach unde his Dad from 1976 to 1980 at Houston and then was the Defensive Coordinator when he followed him to New Orleans.

The Oilers remained in Texas until 1997 when Bud Adams moved he team to Tennessee. In 1999 they changed their mascot to the Titans, but Bud Adams still owns the mascot name Oilers, which is why unlike Cleveland who also lost a football tam and got one back, the city of Houston did not get back their Oilers.

The Cowboys lead the all time series 7-5. Dallas has won the last 2 meetings to take this lead. 2 games is the longest winning streak by both teams. This is Dallas third time, the Oilers did it once.

The series is 3-3 in Dallas. The Cowboys are 3-1 at Houston, 1-1 in Tennessee. The only Cowboys Head Coaches other than Landry to have more than 1 game against the Oilers/Titans were Barry Switzer and Dave Campo. This happened due to the realignment of 2002 when the Texans joined the NFL. Landry was 4-2 against Bud Adams' Oilers. Jimmy was 0-1, Barry 1-1, Campo 1-1, and Parcells 1-0 against them. Chan Gailey never faced them. This is Wade's first game against them as Cowboys Head Coach.

Dallas is coming out of their bye week. They are 16-5 all time coming off a bye week. Wade Phillips is 3-0 coming off a by week.

I don't care how fast he is; if the defense can stay in his running lanes, he will be going nowhere fast.

This week, he wasn't nearly as explosive as he has been. Hopefully given our bye week, our defense comes out on fire.

It took me forever to figure out what you were talking about.

Very nice slam.

Not to look ahead, because I'm sure not overlooking the Titans, but I do like how the schedule is shaping up over the next few weeks. Home against Tennessee and away against the Vikings, but Minnesota plays the Monday night game this coming week. They'll have a short week to get ready for us and the biggest plus is they still won't have Sidney Rice. Then consecutive home games against the Gints and the Jags. I think the next four games will pretty much tell the tale of our season. We need to get on a roll and make up for the poor start.

They took allot of cheap shot's vs the giants a few weeks back. They were baiting them all game the giants eventually cracked and started hitting back but they were the ones the refs seen which is almost always the case .. lol

Finnegan in particular . He reminded me of brian dawkins when he was on philthy , With all his fist punches and late hits when guy's were already down.

Barry Switzer was 1-1 against the Oilers. Remember when they came to Texas Stadium on Thanksgiving in 1997 and beat us?

According to ProFootbalReference.com, Chan Gailey never coached against the Oilers or the Titans. He only got to coach against the AFC West and AFC East in 1998 and 1999.

Dave Campo coached against them twice and was 1-1 against the Titans. Remember that horrendous 31-0 shutout they handed us on Christmas Night in 2000?

I always enjoy reading the primers, Hostile. This week's primer was a lot like last week's, but that's because Bud Adams was a jerk and moved the Oilers and kept the name.

Nice catch. Thank you.

I definitely remember that 31-0 shelling we took. Horrible game. Nothing went right. A 5-11 season to forget.

Boy, do I. That was the Thanksgiving game characterized by one drive in the game that went for nearly 13 minutes. It was the longest sustained drive that I ever remember, and we just couldn't get our defense off the field. It ruined my Thanksgiving, I tell you.

That year we were 6-6 at the Thanksgiving break. I had every expectation that the team would roll off 4 straight wins and get back into the playoffs, as they had every year. Instead, Fisher's squad sent us spiraling for what became 4 consecutive losses to end 6-10, and end Switzer's short reign in Dallas.

I hate the Titans and Oilers.

It was actually the 45-17 beatdown we took against the Packers four days prior (in Green Bay) that helped send us to the basement.

But that was a frustrating game against the Oilers because it was so back and forth. Remember that touchdown Irvin caught and how fired up he was? You just felt like we were going to pull it out, but the Oilers just kept extending it to a two-score game.

1997 was a weird season. At least we didn't get beat on a Chris Boniol field goal on Monday Night Football. Ha!
