Unless I flat out missed it, I have never done a Primer thread for the Eagles. I know I have quit doing these in the past because of lack of interest, but I didn't realize I had never done one for the Eagles of all teams.

The Eagles fist logo was taken from Franklin D. Roosevelt's National Recovery Act logo. That logo was the inspiration for their mascot.

The Philadelphia Eagles have been in the NFL since 1933. They were originally called the Frankford Yellow Jackets, but that franchise went bankrupt in 1931. They were out of football in 1932, then in 1933 the franchise was awarded to Bert Bell and Lud Wray.

Bert Bell was a true football man. He is credited with creating the NFL Draft. The first Draft was held in 1935 for the 1936 season. The very first player ever drafted was Jay Berwanger out of Chicago, by the Eagles. If Bert Bell could see the Draft today I bet he would smile. Bert Bell also was the Eagles Head Coach from 1936 to 1940.

Bell left the Eagles to be co-owner of the Steelers with Art Rooney. In reality Rooney sold the Steelers to a man named Alex Thompson. Then joined Bell with the Eagles and together they traded the Eagles for the Steelers.

During World War II the two teams joined to become the Steagles and then they separated back into 2 franchises after the War. Bell was the Head Coach of the Steelers or Steagles from 1941 to 1946 when he resigned to assume the office of Commissioner. He replaced Elmer Layden and became the first true powerful NFL Commissioner, a position that originally was called President. Layden was the first true Commissioner.

Bert Bell died in 1959 watching a game between the Eagles whom he co-founded, co-owned, and coached, and the Steelers whom he co-owned and coached until he stepped down to become Commissioner. Legend has it he died as the Eagles scored the winning touchdown. He had planned to resign as NFL Commissioner and resume ownership of the Eagles. It never happened. He was eventually replaced as Commissioner by Pete Rozelle.

Bell was one of the first inductees into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1963. I believe he was the first member inducted posthumously. The Bert Bell Award is also named after him and is awarded annually to the Player of the Year. It awarded by the Maxwell Club which Bert Bell also founded. Three Dallas Cowboys have won this award. Don Meredith in 1966, Roger Staubach in 1971, and Emmitt Smith in 1993.

Alex Thompson succeeded Bell as owner of the Eagles. In 1949 Thompson sold the Eagles to a syndicate led by Leonard Tose. Tose was buying the 2 time NFL defending Champions. The first player drafted in the Tose era was Chuck Bednarik. He is quite possibly the greatest Eagle of all time. The very last of the 60 minute men who played both sides of the football. Concrete Charlie played on the lines, a true 2 way player.

Tose sold the Eagles to Norman Braman in 1985 and Braman sold the Eagles to current owner Jeffrey Lurie.

The Eagles won three NFL Championships. The first in 1948, a repeat in 1949, and they were the NFL Champions in Dallas' inaugural year of 1960, the year Bert Bell was hoping to resume ownership of the team from Tose. The Eagles have also played in 2 Super Bowls, but have lost both. The first was Super Bowl XV which they lost to the Raiders. They also lost Super Bowl XXXIX to the New England Patriots.

The Eagles are the 2nd team ever to play the Cowboys. A 25-27 loss for the Cowboys. The 1960 Cowboys were 0-11-1 on the season. But to lose by only 2 points to the eventual NFL Champion is pretty impressive. More proof of how special Tom Landry really was.

Beginning in 1961 the Eagles and Cowboys have been in the same Division and thus have played a home and away series every year except 1982 when the NFL strike eliminated the game in Philly.

The Cowboys lead the all time series 53-43. The Cowboys are 22-25 in Philadelphia. The turn of the Century series has been kind to the Eagles. Since 2000 the Cowboys are 5-13 against them.

The Cowboys have swept the season series 16 times. 1968 to 1972 the Cowboys won every game. Counting the win the the 2nd game of 1967 the Cowboys won 11 games in a row for the longest win streak in the series. The Eagles longest win streak was the 2nd game of 1987 to the first game of 1991. An 8 game streak.

The Cowboys season sweeps happened in 1968, 1969, 1970, 1971, 1972, 1975, 1976, 1977, 1978, 1981, 1983, 1984, 1993, 1994, 1998, and 2005.

The Eagles have swept the season series 10 times. 1961, 1964, 1988, 1989, 1990, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2004, and 2006.

This game will be played on Sunday Night Football which began in 2006. The Cowboys are the most successful team on Sunday Night Football with an 8-3 record. Bill Parcells was 2-2, Wade Phillips is 6-1. This is the 3rd time the Cowboys and Eagles have faced each other on Sunday Night Football. They are 1-1 against each other in the game. The interesting thing about the game they lost to the Eagles on Sunday Night Football is that it was actually played on a Monday. It was on Christmas Day 2006. Even though it was played on a Monday, it was a Sunday night Football telecast.

Great write up Hostile man. This highlights a bunch of reasons some ownage will probably occur at the Linc. This decade has been good to the Eagles, led by future HOFer, McNabb:D

The 2006 Christmas game was at Texas Stadium and not in Filthy.

Wasn't that game played in Dallas with Jeff Garcia quarterbacking the Eagles to an upset victory?

Bert Bell seems like a guy I need to learn more about. Seems like a man who really made an impact on the game. Wow ... there is something positive about the Eagles franchise. :)

Foolhardy? I'll just call you Fool for short.

As I am fond of saying, last year doesn't matter this year. It is the same for previous years. Fool, I don't think it would be wise to take this game so lightly. Not even when all you are really doing is trying to stir up emotions on a rival board. A tactic I do not recommend on this one. We don't suffer Fools too far here. You see Fool, this isn't my first rodeo. I know exactly what you are trying to accomplish with puny little jabs like this.

Your Eagles played a great game against the Giants after looking rather pedestrian in recent weeks. Or have you forgotten the Raiders? I can see why you would, it was hardly a blip on the national media radar that you lost to that pathetic squad. If it had been the Cowboys who had lost that game the ESPN sharks would have smelled chum in the water.

Despite Mr. Banner's loquacious and gracious bestowal upon the Eagles the title of the NFL's most talented team you simply have not played up to that praise Fool.

Ownage? Fool, that is nothing but a hollow word with the game still a week away. You caught a reeling Giants team (you do realize they had lost 2 in a row already?) at the right time in your house. Take a good look at the next team you face. They aren't reeling. In fact, if you look close enough Fool, you might see that they are starting to get it.

The Eagles could win. I won't deny that. I own up to that fact in the very first post of the thread. They have been the better team this decade. No doubt about it. Are they the better team in 2009? I don't know the answer to that yet, and Fool, neither do you.

I don't know that I can agree with you that the decade has been good to the Eagles. Would I trade places with you? Yeah, I would Fool. Would I call it a good decade if we did? I honestly wouldn't. Some around here would because they are so myopic about the string of seasons without a post season victory. My tastes are a little more epicurean than that Fool. I don't want a taste of the pie. I want the whole pie. Year after year of chokes would not have me on a rival board crowing. But that's just me Fool.

I just call it like I see it. Not trying to stir up anything. Just like you claim, the Cowboys are starting to get it after the defense and Romo have looked pathetic at times, the Eagles are getting it too. I think this board is the one taking the Eagles lightly. I would be real worried if I were you, if the Eagles have the ball, with under two minutes to go, and McNabb has Maclin, Jackson, and westbrook. While the Cowboys have Hamlin, Carpenter, two second year corners and Newman who has consistently been owned by McNabb

Westbrook? Fool, are you really an Eagles fan? I ask because LeSean McCoy carried the ball for you yesterday because once again Westbrook is injured. I would think an Eagles fan would know that. Am I wrong Fool?

Yeah, you aren't trying to stir anything up as you sit here crowing about 2nd year CBs and at the same time praising a 2nd year WR and a rookie WR. Fool, you're transparent. I told you this isn't my first rodeo Fool.

I can tell you more about DeSean Jackson than you can. You see I live in Pac 10 country and am a Pac 10 homer. I can tell you that I watched Antonie Cason of Arizona make him a non factor every time the Bears played the Wildcats. He's a good player, but he is hardly an unstoppable force. He can be neutralized. Sometimes by his own arrogance as we witnessed last year when he let go of the ball before crossing the goal line. Fortune smiled on you that day Fool. Well, not really since we won that game 41-37. His arrogance didn't cost you on that play, but it could have Fool.

We start Bobby Carpenter Fool? You don't mention Ratliff, Ware, or Brooking Fool? And you want me to pay attention to you exactly why? Fool, do you really think it is clever to name your best players and our fringe players in the same comparison and act like it is a point? Come on Fool, wake up and smell the coffee brewing. What about Witten, Austin, Romo, or our RBs Fool? Are you blissfully unaware of them Fool?

Save your protests Fool. Your transparency has stripped you of any credibility. It would be silly of you to continue to respond to me Fool, because quite simply, you're out of your league. The fact is I know more about your team than you do.

A real eagle fan, or at least one that knows his team would never say this.

Although you didn't say it, I'm assuming you meant driving for the go ahead score.

In case you don't know, go ask you friend PT how McNabb in recent seasons has fared in that scenario.

Thanks.
