For some reason my Microsoft Excel will not open. All other components of my Microsoft Office work fine, but Excel wants me to insert the installation disc.

Any ideas what the problem might be?

I have some files on Excel that I don't want to lose.

are you trying to open just excel itself, or a certain excel file?

Just Excel.

I have the Office installation disc here somewhere, but I have no idea where as of right now.

There are different things that can cause this. Might be an update issue. Might be trying to open an excel document that someone sent you that is from a newer version of Office/excel.

Try going to your start menu, click on the run option, type in excel and hit the ok button. Once a new excel document opens (if it does) you can click the office symbol on the top tool bar and click the Open option and then browse to find the excel document you want and choose it.

Well, I'm no help then. My theory was that you were attempting to open a file that had stuff on it needing a certain plug-in to be installed for it to function, and you did not have the plug-in installed. Hence, it asking for the disc.

Okay. Found the installation disc and everything is back.

Whew.

fyi - your files would have been fine regardless. just excel being a pain it sounds like.

Sounds like your file got corrupted. Do you do your regular PC maintenance?

disk cleanup
defrag
etc

Hey Hos, don't know if you have it yet, but you should go to www.***NOT-ALLOWED*** and get an account there, it's free up to 2 GB of storage.

You can then upload all your important files for safekeeping. You can also access them from your pc, phone, ipad, etc.

I was gonna mention it should be fine.

Was gonna recommend a transfer of the excel files to a memory stick or copy to a folder on the desktop if it was stuff he absolutely didn't want to lose.

Never know with MS stuff.
