Well we've been running the 3-4 for a while now, opinions?

Just want to see what you guys think about the 3-4 now that we've been running it for a bit, even though Wade has tweaked it a bit. You think we've got the personnel to play it now, or are we still working on bringing guys in?

I think the same thing about it that I always have. It's just a defensive scheme. It doesn't fix anything. It doesn't solve anything. It has limitations. It has advantages. It needs the right personnel and we seem to have it.

For the record, I would say the exact same thing about the 4-3. I'm consistent. It's just a scheme.

If either one were unstoppable every team would use them.

IMO it will be better with a healthy Newman and Henry.......Both CB's have not played together (healthy) this year.......mix that in with a healthier Ellis (after the bye week) and we should see some improvement.......

here is what I will say....if we paired this offense and the agressive approach of this offense...with the bend but don't break defense of a few years ago, which was #1 in the NFL by the way...we would still be 6-1. The only difference is we would not have given up as many points to the Pats and Giants as we did. I will eat crow if I am wrong...but the Pats will not look nearly as dominating against the Commanders next week. They will win..but they will not convert 3rd down after 3rd down...and they will not get behind the defense as much

I agree with everything you say, except if the Skins sit back in a zone and rush four, like they have been, Brady will roast them all day.

I think it's becoming more effective every year. I'd like to see some more blitzing or at least show more blitz. Hopefully, we can get more creative towards the end of the season. I wanna see them improve every week and then peak in the postseason.

I like the way its being used and yes Dallas does have good personnel for it. I like the moving around by Ware and the different looks he gives the O-line. I recently talked to Shawne Merriman about it and he is not real happy with Cotrell's Def and misses Wade big time....he also told me before the Pats game that Dallas would win the game and that Wade would have a good Def for them.......I haven't talked to him since..........

I think this Def will be in the top ten for yards against the rest of the way here, but will continue to give up 20-25 points on average, due to being in shoot-outs and such. its hard to keep team in the 12-18 range on average while scoring 30-35 points.

Agreed. That said, I do like the advantages of the 3-4 more so than the 4-3.

I think it is easier to find players to play within the 3-4 than it is the 4-3. As Phillips himself said it is difficult to go out and find 4 solid down lineman let alone backups to rotate with in game. 3-4 I do think it is easy to find the tweeners who tend to be a bit small to play as down lineman but have the athletic ability and speed to play in the 3-4.

I just don't have a preference either way and never have. As long as we have the personnel, run whatever.

Conceptually, I like it. It's still an East-coast defense, though, and it doesn't belong in Dallas IMHO.

Well, Wade Phillips' style of 3-4 did originate in Texas.

I'm a 43 guy, probably always will be. Having said that, we run a 34 so doesn't matter.

I will say this though, the Vikes front 7 was impressive I thought. Up until late in the 4th quarter, they did a nice job against the run and put good pressure against the pass. If they get some offense, that team might be pretty tough.

I love it. It's my favorite D we could run. Seriously. A one-gap, attacking 34 with all the stunting and zone blitzes? That's so cool.

That said, of course it's players that win. And right now, I almost think our defensive linemen are better than our linebackers. Ware is great and Brady is good against the run, but other than that, we're mediocre at LB. How about a line of Canty, Tank, Hatcher, and Ratliff? And Spears on run downs? That's pretty strong IMO.

That's not to say we should switch or anything like that. It's just that we've really gotten lucky on guys like Hatcher, Ratliff, and Canty.

You seem to have a lot of faith in Henry's abilities at corner.

IMHO, we area better off with Reeves/Newman than Henry/Newman.
